Week 4: DB 2: Simple and Compound Sentences

Review:

  • A simple sentence is one independent clause, which means it can stand alone and make sense. It has one subject-verb pair. Simple does not mean short or boring.
    • Examples:
      • Ken Bain wrote a book.
      • Ken Bain, a provost and vice president, wrote a book.
      • Ken Bain, a provost and vice president at a university, wrote a book.
      • In 2012, Ken Bain, a provost and vice president at a university, wrote a book about successful learners.
        • These are all simple sentences even though they vary in length. In sentence two and three, there is extra descriptive information given, but it does not change the essential subject-verb pairing.
        • In the last sentence, there is a preposition phrase of time at the start of the sentence, and there is a prepositional phrase at the end, yet these do not change the core structure of one subject-verb pairing.
  • A compound sentence has two independent clauses linked with a semi-colon OR a comma + FANBOYS* coordinating conjunction.
    • *FANBOYS is an acronym to help us remember the seven conjunctions for compound sentences. There are only seven: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
    • Examples
      • Laura Rendón is a professor, and Ken Bain is a provost and vice president.
        • The independent clauses are underlined, and the comma + FANBOYS are in bold.
  • One sentence type is not better than the other; they are just different types. Effective writing uses a variety of sentences correctly.

For this discussion board (DB), your task is to recognize simple and compound sentences in your own writing. Here are the steps:

  1. Review your first paper that you will turn in this week.
  2. Find one example of a simple sentence you used and find one example of a compound sentence you used.
  3. Paste them into a discussion board.

In total, this DB will only be two sentences.
