based on your character and how you were brought up/taught to behave? Explain how you
would approach or deal wit the problems in your chosen case based on your intuition and/or
character, without any fixed moral framework.

Q: How might one of the core ethical frameworks discussed in this course (specifically
Utilitarianism, Deontology, or Virtue Ethics) help in justifying your actions, should you face
a similar dilemma? Please choose the core framework/theory that you believe offers the best, most
ethical way forward in dealing with the problem(s) presented in the case you have chosen. To do so,

Proper grammar, spelling, sentence and essay structure throughout; proper citation of any/all sources
used; formatting consistent with guidelines; expected word length.
General writing guidelines:
Essay length: no less than 1,000 words (which is approx. 2.5+ pages in length).
Format proper essay structure throughout; please make sure to introduce your topic as well as offer some
concluding remarks; also, make sure to I) keep your margins within a normal range (not too wide or too
narrow), 2) keep the font within a normal range (11-12 point), and 3) use a normal font (Times New Roman,
Gill Sans MT, etc.). Significant deviations from these guidelines may result in the loss of points, as this will affect
your essay’s reader-friendliness!
Research: while not much is expected, some research will be necessary in that you will be revisiting a few
readings in answering the questions above (see rubric); you are expected to address any of the texts relating to
Utilitarianism, Deontology (duty ethics), or Virtue Ethics. Please see me if you need guidance on which texts are
relevant here – I am happy to remind you!
Referencing of sources: when referring to anything from the texts we’ve read on the core moral/ethical theories
or Moriarty’s text, pick a formal citation style (i.e. MLA, etc.) and use it consistently; anything (ideas or quotes)
you have borrowed or gleaned from various sources must be acknowledged and cited properly, or else your
work will be cited for plagiarism.
On the following pages: see the various Engineering, Business, Diplomacy, Psychology/Counselling, and
Architecture/Design cases you have to choose from (and remember: just choose ONE! And, it can be
ANY ONE – feel free to go outside your comfort zone or outside the professional sphere you know
best!) From there, write your essay! PTO->

“Have you said anything to your wife about this? Your decision will affect her as much
as it will affect you. And what about your kids? Have you thought about how it might
affect them? You may have to move. And what about your family’s needs? They’ve
become accustomed to a certain kind of life. If you move ahead and blow the whistle,
everything will change. You may never even work in the industry again. Think about all
your education, about your plans and goals.” Douglas is trying to talk some sense into
his friend, who has discovered that the managers of his company knowingly let a prod-
uct on the market with a defect. The defect is beginning to hurt people, mainly chil-
dren. Further, his friend has discovered that the problem could be solved with a
relatively inexpensive $14 part. Since there are no government industry standards, how-
ever, the company will wait until forced by the government to attend to the defect,
thinking that this is the more profitable move. Douglas’s friend thinks it is his duty to
bring this to the attention of the public, but Douglas knows, having seen this kind of
situation before, that his friend will be fired and will almost certainly never work again
as an engineer because of his reputation as a whistleblower.
