Social Enterprise Proposal Project
The current times present unprecedent challenges. The times also provide several examples of
market failures as discussed in the first half of the semester, as well as opportunities for social
entrepreneurship activity. In this project, you will have an opportunity to put your learning to
the task of tackling a current social problem.
Part I (180 points):
You will select one social problem from a list provided and design a social venture to tackle the
problem. You will turn in a PowerPoint presentation, and have your analyses and responses
entered as the Notes for each slide. The Notes effectively consist of your report so you will be
expected to do research and support your ideas/proposals. To earn a good grade, prepare a
presentation in which you demonstrate an ability to find AND organize information as well as
critical thinking by synthesizing new perspectives to present your venture.
Presentations will be posted on the course website.
Part II (20 points):
Once the assignments are posted, you will be assigned to review a set of presentations. You will
be provided a review form to complete and will submit it.

The Assignment
We defined a market failure as an economic-social situation where the distribution of goods
and service in a free market is inefficient, resulting in social losses (problems).
Below are examples of social problems that emerged at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic:
1. Lack of ability to conduct the needed number of virus testing locally and nationwide.
2. Unavailability of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) for healthcare workers and the
public.
3. Shortage of basic commodities such as toilet paper and paper towels.
4. Insufficient capacity in hospitals and medical facilities to handle the vast number of sick
people coming to get medical help.
Your task is to design a realistic and doable for-profit social enterprise that will provide a
solution to ONE of the above social problems. Your social enterprise must be contextualized in
a real location, driven by real markets, real needs, and address real social problems, for which
you can find factual information and data.
You are expected to use material from the book and external sources in in designing your
solution.
Your starting point Chapter 5. Then, use material from other chapters (especially 3-9) to
help with your analyses.
Support your arguments / proposal whenever possible with textbook and external sources.
Pre-work
Select ONE of the above problems.
think of a solution to this problem. Spend time thinking about and articulating a solution in
your mind. Draft a solution, talk with friends/family, etc. This thinking part is very
important.
Once you are done with the above, proceed to begin the write-up for Part I.

Deliverables, Style, and Submission:
Part I: PowerPoint presentation, with notes (no written report). Follow the guidelines below:
1. Your analyses and responses to the questions are to be submitted as a PowerPoint
presentation.
2. Presentation will include up to 13 slides.
a. The first slide will include your name and the social problem you are addressing.
You may include agenda or overview here.
b. Slides 2 13 will be the content of your presentation.
c. References should be added at the end (those slides do not count toward the
slide limit).
3. Review the file size of your presentation and make sure it does not exceed 750 kb
(remove images, reformat, use a different PowerPoint template).
4. Slide NOTES: This is a critical component of the assignment. Assume you stand in front
of a group of people and present your material; the NOTES section of the slide includes
what you will say and how you present; that is, it includes your explanations of the
phrases/bullets on the slide, support, etc.
a. Make sure the notes are content-rich and present insightful synthesis that
demonstrates good coverage and strong command of the topic.
b. Make sure your slides and notes clearly address the different parts of the
assignment and the different questions.
5. Submit PPT or PPTX file by uploading it through the Project Part I Assignment tool.
Note to Mac users: if you are using the built-in conversion functionality in Mac, make
sure the document is saved as pptx not as .pages or any other format.
Part II:
A worksheet with guidelines will be provided to you, and you will complete the document
and submit by uploading through the Project Part II Assignment tool. .
General Notes and Guidelines
1. The textbook should be viewed as one possible source of information. You must do the
necessary research to support your analyses and proposals,
2. I am not looking for an exhaustive list of everything about these topics. Instead, I expect
you to be intensely critical of all information available in secondary sources, and to carefully
select those issues that are most valuable. Make sure to provide the sources of the
information (I often go back to the source and read it
.)
3. For Part I – Consider the format of the assignment: You are submitting a presentation (think
of it as if you are presenting to an executive group
.). Since you dont actually talk,
readers rely on the slide NOTES: your challenge is to provide a comprehensive, organized, &
succinct explanation.
MGMT 4235, Spring 2020
4. Support and referencing: you must support your analysis. It is very important that you use
proper referencing (Author, year) (see referencing guidelines, on the website).
5. Good writing is expected, both on the slides and on the notes. Make sure to proof your
work.
6. Late assignment policy: up to 2 hours – lose 15% of the grade; up to 24 hours – lose 30% of
the grade. No assignments accepted after 24 from due date, unless special circumstances
apply. Instructor makes determination on acceptance and grade penalty.
Individual or team?
The default for the project is individual. This is to encourage you to practice social distancing
and remove any requirement for in-person contact. However, if you like and have digital
capabilities, you may team with up to 2 individuals to create a small team (2-3 students max)
and work on the project together (both Part I and Part II).
If you consider a team, please note:
There will be no peer evaluations. All members will get the same grade.
Once students commit to a team, there is no way to retract and/or remove a member.
University facilities/classrooms will NOT be available for meetings. The class is now
100% online and the project should be done without any in-person meetings.
If you opt for a team, please follow the following process:
1) Communicate with the individuals you wish to team with and reach an agreement. Given
that there is no peer evaluation, the logistics, and the potential constraints on individuals
given the existing situation, I strongly encourage to carefully evaluate whether you would
be better off working on your own or with others.
2) Once you are all on board, one member of the team will send me a Team Formation email
(in the subject) with the name of the other person(s) in the team.
a) Team Formation email must be sent to me no later than Monday April 6th.
b) All team members MUST be copied on the Team Formation email.
c) Please DO NOT send the email from Canvas but through the regular email
(anat.barnir@unt.edu) as I cannot see who was copied on Canvas emails. Make sure
teammates are copied.
3)
Wait for a confirmation email from me (48 hours) that I received and logged your team.
Once you receive the confirmation email, your team is formed and no changes are
possible. Note: When I receive Team Formation email it is assumed that all individuals
copied on the email are aware of it (check email) and agree to be on the team. If you are
copied on such an email without agreeing to be on the team, you must notify me within
36 hours.
The above process is necessary to ensure that individuals are not put on a team without their
consent (which has happened ?) and to avoid shotgun teams at the last moment.

Scaling the Social Venture
CHAPTER 9
Focus points
?
The nature and objectives of scaling social ventures
?
The challenges to growth
?
Tactics and strategies for expansion
?
Factors that support and enhance growth
The basics
?
Scaling pertains to the ability of a social venture to grow in conjunction
with the need or problem it addresses
?
Magnitude of venture should match magnitude of problem Its OK to start
on a small scale, but should be able to grow
?
High impact investors expect the social venture to maximize SROI
?
Want their investments to achieve as much social mission as possible
?
The general emerging paradigm social enterprise should seek to
expand the bottom line (social impact, positive environmental impact,
profits
?
The practical implications: Social entrepreneurs should actively seek
opportunities to extend the reach of their missions
Challenges to growth
?
Organizational inertia
?
Can be particularly threatening to social ventures culture
?
Inconsistency between vision of entrepreneur and board of directors
?
Environment and other stakeholders may oppose growth and perceive it
as inconsistent with local mission
?
Inability to demonstrate measurable success in achieving mission
?
Needed resources
?
Dees:
?
Threat-based resistance
?
Inertia-based resistance
Building capacity for growth
1.
Revisit mission
2.
Make growth decisions (consistent with mission)
3.
Decide on the organizational structure: who has control
4.
?
Headquarters vs. Field units
?
Control flexibility tradeoff
Determine a reliable model of stable stream of cash inflows.
?
5.
Where will the money come from
Ensure proper supportive culture and leadership
Strategies for growth
Dissemination
?
Making reach of social ventures services widely available to anyone who
needs the service
?
Focus on expanding reach and impact
?
Example
?
KaBOOM!
?
Straightforward, inexpensive, fast
?
Downside: lack of control on implemented components
Strategies for growth
Branching
?
Expansion through establishing presence in multiple locations
?
Control
?
Expensive, possible coordination issues
?
Is not an efficient approach to growth in that it requires buying or leasing
additional facilities and office equipment, hiring and training additional
staff, and managing from a distance.
Strategies for growth
Affiliation
?
Expansion through establishing some offices outside of HQ
?
Affiliates have considerable autonomy
?
Local offices are self sufficient
?
Less expensive to implement
?
Example: Dress For Success
Strategies for growth
Social Franchising (Hybrid)
?
Parent venture and affiliated ventures (Franchisor and franchisees)
?
Franchisees are independently owned, pays a fee, obligated by contract to
maintain some practices
?
Frandhisor provides brand, product, or service, operating support
?
Permits scaling fast while maintaining control
?
