This week you read two chapters in tophat about people. We defined the various sources of identity, how geography plays into that, how we track and understand people around the world, and how and why ‘what people are where’ changes. That’s a lot.

Now that you’ve chosen a region, let’s work to understand who is there a bit more. Using the indicators of identity in chapter 2 , discuss some of the defining characteristics of your place: religion, ethnicity, language, evidence of material culture, etc. That can be a brief summary. Note also any tensions over culture in your place (for example, the current black lives matters discussions here in the US). Then briefly discuss demographic issues: what are demographic challenges facing your region? Consumption? Birth rates (related to the status of women or access to health care?)? Lack of jobs or education for a rapidly expanding population? Too many retirees for a shrinking population? What can you find out?

It’s unlikely that you can talk about everything above, but provide an overall picture for your region. Make sure to follow the assignment guideline (including word limit, visuals, coherence, and citations) as you will be graded based on these factors.
