ABA primarily uses single-subject designs (within-subject analysis) in order to demonstrate functional relationships between environmental variables (independent variables) and the behaviors of interest (dependent variables). Identifying the probable function of a target behavior involves the identification of the discriminative stimulus (antecedent – independent variable) and the consequence, which can best be identified by conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA).
