What I Love and Hate About Visual Culture Phenomenon Reflective Paper What I Love and Hate about Visual Culture is the theme for this semesters final project. Select one phenomenon in visual culture (an artist, museum, shopping mall, gallery, movie theater, music store, restaurant, bowling alley, thrift store, tattoo parlor, hair salon, fashion trend, magazine, tv show, sport, entertainment, website, blog, video game, night club, school, gift shop, etc.) that you find absolutely compelling. Produce a four-part analysis of this phenomenon:
First, describe, examine, and analyze how this phenomenon manifests itself in visual culture. This will require that you thoroughly research and document your subject matter. Collect as much visual evidence as possible. Also, when describing your material, do not assume that your reader is familiar with the subject matter. Be as specific and thorough as possible.
Second, analyze this phenomenon from the point of view of a promoter, advocate, advertiser, or someone who passionately loves it. In this section make a persuasive argument for the virtues and values of your subject matter. Here you may choose to take on the voice of an advertiser, promoter, or fan. You may also want to compare your chosen subject to other aspects of visual culture.
Third, analyze this phenomenon from the point of view of a critic, cynic, or someone who despises it. Again, you must make a persuasive argument pointing out the pitfalls, dangers, or shortcomings of this phenomenon.
Finally, provide a conclusion to your analysis. What would you recommend for the future of this aspect of visual culture? How would you modify, improve, or dismantle it?
Projects will be evaluated on the following criteria: thorough research; clear and thoughtful arguments; critical and creative analysis of visual material supported by visual examples; serious effort, preparation, and engagement with the subject matter. The written component of the projects must be handed in typed, double-spaced, and spell-checked with complete references (footnotes or endnotes, full bibliography, illustrations) formatted according to the CCA style guide for citations – http://libraries.cca.edu/learn/citations.
