Help me study for my Linguistics class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.

For the 2nd write up assignment you will watch the documentary entitled ‘American Tongues’(1988). The documentary explores different regional (and some social) dialects of English in the US, and examines stereotypes and prejudices associated with several of those dialects.

Your write up will be part summary and part opinion.

Word limit is minimum 500 words and maximum 1000 words.

Divide your write up into two parts:

1. Summary

• Include the main message the film conveys.
• Include some specific instances of regional variations of American English discussed in the film.
• Include 3-4 specific instances of negative stereotyping/ prejudice towards regional variations.
• Include any information presented in the film that discusses the effect of negative stereotyping/ prejudice on the speakers.

2. Opinion

• Based on the information presented in the film, and your personal experience (if applicable), discuss whether it is appropriate to stereotype language variations, and as a consequence, have biases (positive or negative) towards the speakers of the dialects.
• Your opinion doesn’t have to be limited to biases towards variations of American English. If you are an international student, feel free to write about your perspective regarding language stereotypes in your home country.
