A paper on “The Militarization of Everyday Life” or “Alternatives to the Militarized Present.” Final papers will build on contemporary global issues journal entries and final writing assignment proposals. The final paper will be an opportunity for students to practice critical thinking skills by illustrating how specific aspects of their daily lives or daily lives somewhere around the global are enmeshed in global conflicts and processes of militarization, or to apply their critical and creative faculties by outlining and describing imaginative alternatives to the current global order of militarism and conflict. All sources must be cited and the word count limit does not include references. Paper must be double-spaced and written in Times New Roman 12 point font.
The purpose of this assignment is to engage in scholarly analysis and explanation of the origins and consequences of global conflicts and cultures of militarism by analyzing how they shape daily lives or inspire practices to shape alternative futures. The purpose is also to write an academic paper based on scholarly research that applies academic concepts and builds on rigorous exploratory writing and a paper proposal.
In the process of writing your final paper, you will practice the following skills:
Open source research on global conflicts/cultures of militarism
Identification and selection of a particular conflict/militarism to focus on, especially one that highlights global interdependence and the far-reaching consequences of militarized violence
Exploration and analysis of the origins and implications of global conflicts/cultures of militarism, especially their impact on daily life and practices of resistance
Connecting contemporary global issues to course readings, themes, and questions
Academic writing
Articulating a critical perspective and thesis statement
Using evidence to support your argument and perspective
Citation of academic texts and other learning materials

This assignment will help you become more knowledgeable about how conflict and cultures of militarism, which represent contemporary global issues, shape daily lives in different ways around the globe, simultaneously uniting and diving them.
