Your team will be addressing the following topic :
Black Swan events are “incidents that describe highly improbable but high impact events” (Rothaermel, 2019,
p.40). The Covid-19 pandemic has been identified as an example of a black swan event by many sources. As a
team, you will identify one (only) organization from the following industries/sectors affected by COVID-19 (no
other industries allowed) and consider the impact of Covid-19 on the organization and its leadership team:
• Airlines
• Retail
• Entertainment
• Tourism
Your team will conduct scenario planning using the AFI strategy framework (Rothaermel, 2019, p.39-40). Discuss
how you will apply the analysis, formulation and implementation stages as you develop and then address two
alternate scenarios. You will also need to discuss the implications for strategic leadership of the dominant
strategic plan.

Here is an example of what your team could do for your two scenarios:
One scenario could be on planning for a return to normalcy quite quickly (approximately 3-6 months), and the other scenario could be
where Australia enters a recession in the next 12 months.
It is up to you as a team to decide on the two scenarios that you believe will be most relevant to the
organization.
A few points to note: • You should focus on the Australian Market only (you can draw on information from overseas, but
contextualise it to Australia). • Your audience will be the board or senior management team in the organisation. Every aspect should be
appropriate for the selected audience. • Only one submission per team is required. • Individual submissions for this assessment will not be accepted and will result in receiving zero (0) for this
assessment. • Penalty for late submission: 10% of the marks allocated to the assessment task will be deducted for each
24hrs (or part thereof) that any part of the assessment is late. This also applies to weekends and public
holidays.
