Diablo Valley College Criminal Justice and the War on Drugs Essay You will conduct research into any aspect of the Administration of Justice that incorporates class concepts and prepare a college-quality paper presenting your research, analysis and conclusions. The focus of your paper will be the application of class material and concepts.

Examples include:

Observing a courtroom trial. Your paper will report the date and time, the court, the judge, the docket, the charges, and a summary of the case and a discussion of the legal procedures, evidence and testimony presented, and your findings and conclusions.
A ride-along with a police officer. Your report will include date, time, department, officer, and a summary of your experience in your tour of the facilities and the calls you responded to. It would include information you gather about the officer.
An interview with a criminal justice professional: an interview of an attorney, judge, police officer, probation or parole officer, or any other criminal justice professional. Your report will include a summary of the professional’s background, training and experience, and some of the insights and experiences in their position, and their views of the future.
Research of any current criminal justice legal issue: A paper that discusses and analyzes any current legal issue, for example the Exclusionary Rule, Miranda, the Federal Government’s anti-terrorism enforcement strategies, the war on drugs, Proposition 19 – the Marijuana initiative. You will summarize the issues and discuss how they relate to the criminal justice system, and their impact on society, and your evaluation of these matters today and in the future.
Watch a crime documentary on television (Dateline-Murder, Court TV, etc. not CSI!) or read a non-fiction book about a criminal justice case and detail the crime, the investigation and any related courtroom actions. Give the details and the highlights of the case, detail the evidence and discuss the good and bad aspects of the investigation performed by the police. You should incorporate course knowledge and concepts, such as the law, the constitution, the police investigation and activities, and the criminal justice system.
Research of any current event of significance involving the criminal justice system (Independent Lens: The Force – Oakland PD; The Ferguson, Missouri (Michael Brown) shooting case; Date Line, PBS or 60 Minutes articles on the criminal justice system) or take any current criminal justice incident or matter of significance from any media source. Summarize the key points and how the issues involve the criminal justice system and the criminal law and procedures involved in this course.

Papers will be typed, double-spaced, two to three page minimum, and quality.

Papers will be uploaded into Canvas and are due by Sunday, April 5 at 8PM.
