ATI College Santa Ana Philosophical Approach Towards Justice Discussions Introduction of Weekly Discussion?
Due dates are listed below in weekly assignments, as well as in each canvas module. Each week the instructor will lead a group discussion by posting a critical question related to the weeks philosophical topics. Each student will read the Instructors posting as well as postings from other students before posting a thoughtful, carefully-reasoned response. (Students can post more than once, but must post at least once per week.) A response can be original to ones own thinking, or a respectful but reasoned-response to another students response. Note: This is not a blog or random opinion forum, but an intellectual exercise in philosophical thinking. The instructor will, throughout the week, post follow-up replies to individual students or to the general discussion.
Week 1 Discussion Question
Thrasymachus believes that one is better off being immoral as long as one does not get caught. This is his second thesis, “Injustice Pays.”
In some examples, such as stealing a rich person’s winning lotto ticket, Thrasymachus’ views *might* seem “reasonable.” But what about other cases, such as Wall-street type scandals, crimes involving murder, etc. What about those cases?
Week 2 Discussion Question
Given everything that our text has explained about Plato’s theory of Justice in his Republic, particularly “Justice in the Soul,” what might Plato say to Woody Allen after viewing the film Crimes and Misdemeanors?
Week 3 Discussion Question
A classic problem with Virtue Ethics (–and according to some, Aristotle’s virtue ethics–) is that two (or more) virtues might clash with each other. Suppose, for example, that Grace displays the virtue of “loyalty” by supporting her friends and family. However, the Grace also wants to be a good and law-abiding citizen (which is another virtue). However, her friends and family are involved in dubious illegal activities. Should she be “loyal” to her friends and family, or “civic minded” and report her friends and family to the authorities? Suppose that their activities are very bad for the community as a whole.
The “clash” in this case is the virtue of “loyalty” and the virtue of “civic duty.”
How can a virtue-ethic theorist deal with this type of problem???
