SEPARATISTS The majority of colonists in New England in the 17th Century were Puritan English immigrants. Puritans in England worried about religious and social corruption as they saw an increase in drunks, criminals, unemployed people, gamblers, and secularists. Puritans wanted to clean up society in England because they worried that God would punish them. Most Puritans believed that the best way to do this was to remain in England and reform society. However, there was a minority of Puritans who believed the best way to purify society was to separate from England. This minority were known as Separatists, who believed in establishing a model society in the New World. About 100 Puritans left England in 1620 to establish a colony at Plymouth, which would be known as the Plymouth Colony, or Plymouth Town. This is significant because these Puritans marked one of the first waves of English settlers in the New World and would inspire the Great Migration of mainstream Puritans to the New World.
