As I reflect on my journey through this Sports Management program, I feel that I have grown from a person who started out with a vision of being a coach and with a concentration in Coaching strategy, to a person who developed more of a passion to manage and lead athletes in all sports, through all facets of their athletic experience, as an Athletic Director. Thinking back, I think my mindset began to change when I started reading more into the inequalities women have in sports versus men. As a father of 3 daughters, I would like to be in a position to inspire change and make it common place for young girls to compete in any sport they want but better yet would be to have girls sports where they can work to achieve their dreams on the highest levels. Some of my coursework that I really got into and animated about as I was writing about getting girls more opportunities was the on-going debate about Transgenders in Women’s Sports. I wrote many papers on this topic and explained the current sciences studied that begin to show another possible decline in women’s opportunities if they let males compete based on their gender identity. This topic alone inspires me to want to do more then just coach, don’t get me wrong, I would welcome a coaching opportunity if presented with one but at this moment I’m inspired to do more and leading a program.
An assignment that I believe has helped prepare me for the Athletic Director position was our assignment during this class where I had to interview a professional already in the field. In this assignment I spoke with our local High School Athletic Director Mr. Bradley Pampos of Beavercreek High School. It wasn’t that during this interview he taught me how to be an Athletic Director and now I feel more comfortable doing it, it was more that he shared with me what he does on a daily basis, how he spends most of his time, how he has to interact with parents, coaches and players and it just hit me that this job as an Athletic Director has many parallels to leading a professional team and programs as a SNCO in the United States Air Force. And it was that moment I said to myself, I can do this.
I am very excited about my AF retirement coming up here in the next few months, this Sports Management degree I believe will lead me to where I want to go in Sports and I am looking forward to getting it going.

This Sports Management Program has been challenging for me. It was something that I expected and felt the need to have if I was going apply for the career that I desire once I retire from the military. I was hesitant to start my graduate program due to the challenges that I thought that I would face. After being in a good place I decided to jump into it early last year. I actually though about pursuing a different degree, but I knew where my heart and desires lied. It was in the heart of the sports world. I have dreamed to be a part of it and I knew getting my education was the first step.
I feel that I am better prepared to step into the athletic director role not only because I am educated on the area, but the connections that I have built with people. Over the past several years I have spoken to someone within the athletic department to get a feel of how it is working there. From the financial person who makes decisions down to each individual coach. Most of the challenges they face is usually behind the scenes and not really directed towards the sport of play. Dealing with conflicts is something that I have experience with and there are assignments within this program that have helped me.
One assignment that stood out to me was a scenario based assignment. It was SPMT614 Coaching Theory, Methods and Issues. In week 7 we were presented with 3 scenarios that we had to analyze and make decisions on. It required critical thinking because those scenarios required sound judgment. Whatever bias that you had towards a scenario you had to throw that out the door because as a leader, all eyes are on you. If make the wrong decision, it could give others a bad impression about you as a leader.
