COLLAPSE
Some types of crises, such as earthquakes and hurricanes, are inevitable. These types can only be
controlled through environmental management. However, the meteorologists can provide
relevant information about the occurrence of such disasters to warn people to vacate from the
disaster-prone areas. Crisis such as war can be controlled by encouraging peace talks among the
parties. For example, the Syrian crisis has caused an immense effect on its citizens. A large
number of citizens have fled into neighbouring countries and turned into refugees. Lack of peace
has caused the decline of the country’s economy. The government need to play a central role to
unite people in case of human-made disaster. Crisis does not only affect citizens but also
destroys multinational relationships. I believe there are countries that broke trade ties with Syria
because of a lack of peace.
The occurrence of current types of crisis has created a need for efficiency in humanitarian
services. In the past, the UN was responsible for providing humanitarian services in all
incidences occurring in the world. However, I think the UN agency is not adequate to respond to
every crisis that happens. Therefore, there is a need for the formation of non-governmental
organizations, volunteers and humanitarian agencies to address social welfare in case of a
disaster. Disaster response should be fast, and I think the government is not much reliable
compared to local humanitarian agencies. The provision of humanitarian services should
incorporate teamwork, accountability and equity (Walker & Maxwell, 2014). The agencies
should have modern technology to respond to save the victims effectively. Such include the use
of drones to reach areas that human life is a threat and big data analytics to manage agency
operations.
I would advocate for effective and inclusive leadership to manage humanitarian agencies.
Humanitarian services should be objective and not used to benefit at the expense of disaster
victims. I would incorporate modern technology to manage agency data and ensure a fast
response during a crisis. By encouraging accountability and ethical leadership, I would remove
all evils such as corruption.

COLLAPSE
The world today is witnessing significant crises because of the changes in the social, political,
and economic environment, which are occurring rapidly. But the most serious crisis that is
evolving is that related to security that results in violence, endless wars, mass killings, and
displacement of millions of people (Coppola, 2016). Today’s disasters come with new
challenges to address, and as the world continues to evolve, disasters also are changing. For
instance, a warming climate may be resulting in flooding in some areas and drought in other
parts. The greatest change impacting the evolution of disasters is the increase in the world
population, which results in urban sprawl. Megacities are expanding rapidly, and population
growth is expected to result in the evolution of the crisis. In fact, most of these destructive
disasters can be curbed if people embrace wisdom, put their common interest upon their desires,
and opt for dialogue and patience.
One of the evolving causes of the crisis is internal and external armed conflicts in countries,
which result in violence, mass killings, and displacement of people. Consider a country like
Yemen, which has been experiencing ongoing conflicts resulting in the worst humanitarian crisis
in the world. These conflicts have not only resulted in the deaths of people but have resulted in
millions of them being displaced and food insecurity (WFP, 2019). Currently, in Yemen, more
than 3.34 million people have been displaced, with almost 65% experiencing catastrophic food
gaps, causing serious food insecurity. Another evolving cause of crisis ifs disease outbreaks,
which affect the human population (WFP, 2019). Conditions such as overcrowding,
displacement, malnutrition, and lack of clean water necessitate the transmission of infectious
diseases such as Ebola (Fielding, 2016). These same conditions can cause vaccine-preventable
diseases such as measles, polio, meningitis, cholera, and yellow fever, which break out in
congested areas such as refugee camps and in the cities, resulting in many deaths and high cost
of living for people (Lam, McCarthy & Brennan, 2015).
Having an understanding of how disasters are evolving is essential for the humanitarian group to
have a plan of action in mind. When a disaster strikes like the Yemen conflict, which resulted in
death and food crisis, victims always look up to the humanitarian aid for help. Knowing how
conflict can result in devastating effects, humanitarian aid personnel need to recognize
populations around the world that are vulnerable to conflicts, diseases, and economic
crises(Kapur & Smith, 2011). They should be able to call for a more coordinated, accountable,
and strategic approach to respond to the increasing complexities of disasters. For instance, they
can learn from the Ebola crisis in West Africa that there was poor leadership, inadequate
communication, and differing perspectives when coordinating aid activities (Fielding, 2016).
As an emergency officer, there are various factors that I would consider when preparing and
responding to the evolving causes of disaster (Kapur & Smith, 2011). The essential factor to
consider when preparing for such disasters is to ensure collaboration and appropriate leadership
between members of the organizations. Cooperation and leadership will enable people to work
together under strong leadership to come up with appropriate tools to deliver humanitarian aid to
places affected. Another essential critical issue is communication because it ensures the right
information is at the right place and time (Coppola, 2016). When responding to a crisis, there is
a need to improve communication and dialogue on disaster issues to encourage a more inclusive
approach to humanitarian aid management. When planning for a disaster event, it is essential for
one to have a plan on how to carry out its humanitarian aid activities in place (Fielding, 2016).
A plan will set the organization to have a vision and shared goal in rescuing and helping victims
of disasters.

COLLAPSE
The primary causes of humanitarian crises may be considered to be specific events such as natural disasters.
However, the real causes of humanitarian crises are normally tied to structural problems. These problems
include persistent human rights violations, poverty and inequality, and deficiencies in disaster preparedness.
If a nation has adequate institutions and sociopolitical structures, it can withstand emergency or disaster
events without reaching a state of humanitarian crisis (Martin, 2014). In recent years, one underlying cause
of many natural disasters has been climate change. Climate change is affecting the balance on the whole
planet, causing droughts, floods, and storms, which have severely affected people.
Increasing natural disasters brought on by climate change, and lack of environmental control from
governments and regulatory entities affect mostly developing countries. This is because developing countries
lack proper emergency preparedness and mitigation plans, and also because they suffer the effects of
practices such as deforestation and indiscriminate mining. Therefore, humanitarian aid should go from rich to
poor countries in these crises. However, countries often discriminate in giving humanitarian aid depending
on whether the other country is an ally or is they have causes in common (Stromberg, 2007). I believe that
humanitarian aid has been impacted by climate change because more help is needed to support communities
that are suffering because of the disastrous weather conditions that affect agriculture and all aspects of life.
Access to food and clean water have become perhaps the essential resources needed in these cases.
In order to prepare for the effects of climate change, some changes have to be made in how resources are
used and produced. For example, clean energy should slow down climate change, as well as other alternatives
to harmful practices. Agriculture will have to be redesigned to fit the new climates around the world, which is
a significant challenge, especially for poor and developing countries. Mitigation of the harm produced by
climate change is also very challenging because it implies adapting to changing landscapes and changing
agricultural and other practices previously associated with the climate of a particular place in the world.
Meanwhile, as populations become affected, they must receive aid not only as immediate aid in the form of
food, water, and health but also investments in the long term with alternative plans to withstand ongoing
climate change.

COLLAPSE
The changing landscape of crises
Disasters, both natural and human-made, continue to wreak havoc in many parts
of the world. Recent decades have witnessed pervasive natural and human-made crises,
as Al-Jazairi (2018) explains. The cause and impact of disasters are fast-changing.
Many new disasters occur due to extreme weather conditions, including flash floods,
hurricanes, and drought. Besides these causes, many crises are also human-made. For
example, terrorist attacks have more than tripled in the past few years. Terrorists have
developed sophisticated methods, including the use of both conventional and biological
weapons (Al-Jazairi, 2018). Another cause of crises is the growing problem of
infectious diseases, such as Ebola. Political-inspired crises are also a cause for
humanitarian concern. Generally, therefore, the sources of crises have increased.
The changes have enormous implications for humanitarian aid. First,
humanitarians have to examine many causes of crises. New situations, requiring
humanitarian action, develop every day. For example, humanitarians must focus not
only on natural disasters, but they must also pay attention to human-made causes of
crises, including terrorism and accidents. Secondly, current humanitarian resources and
not adequate. According to Al-Jazairi (2018), incidences of disasters have risen in
recent years, and it means, now more than ever, societies must invest in more
humanitarian aid resources. Humanitarian context is very dynamic, and it requires a lot
of resources (Burke, 2004). Humanitarian aid can no longer depend on NGOs and
volunteers. There is a need to work with governments and the private sector to develop
strategies for responding to current crises.
One of the ways through which humanitarians can prepare and respond to the
changing landscape is by embracing technology. Through technology, for instance, aid
can reach regions where humanitarians would naturally not reach. In times of political
crises, it is often difficult to reach people. Technology can also help to predict the
incidences of crises, thereby permitting early preparation (Islam, Khan, and Sharma,
n.d.). Further technology can assist in coordinating response efforts. Humanitarian aid
should also develop a broad base of partners and donors to help raise funds because
charity and volunteerism are no longer sufficient.

COLLAPSE
Change of nature of the crisis and the evolution of humanitarianism is increasing hence calling
for an international response. There are lots of problems in the world and lots of people facing
harsh conditions such as insufficient food, lack of water, access to clean water, shelter and basic
healthcare. Although the global standards are improving, the humanitarian complex is more
important compared to the emerging crises faced, there is an increased number of droughts in
most of the continents leading to insufficient social protection and public health infrastructure.
Disasters are some of the great calamities such as earthquakes cause a great negative impact. For
example, the earthquake that occurred in Haiti (which is a disaster-prone country among many)
causing large masses of people homeless and even death (Baldwin, 2017).
These crises are caused by civil wars in some countries such as Yemen, peaceful
protesting that later leads to conflicts if not handled in the right manner causing a high number of
deaths and poverty, for example in Syria and other cases involve ethnic conflict and political
instabilities in some countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo among others. These
crises have brought effects such as ecological effects of climate change, rapid urbanization that is
unsustainable and biodiversity crises among others. However, countries can be prepared for such
landscape changes by understanding social sciences, public health sectors, natural sciences and
diplomacy among others. In addition, all the disciplines can also increase the trespass
professional boundaries to make work easier (Weiss, 2018).
