Nursing is both a Science and an Art
The question of whether nursing is a science or art has persisted for a long time. Some
researchers classify nursing as an art due to its human aspect and the fact that a nurse acts as a
doctor’s assistant, thus providing necessary help. As a consequence, many see nursing as
opposing to the methodical science of medicine. However, other researchers see it as a science.
Because nursing involves set down procedures, and evidence-based practices, there is a
reasonable argument that it is indeed a science. However, an analysis of the issues that pertain to
nursing shows that nursing is both an art and a science.
Nursing as a science
Nursing is a scientific discipline that is based upon academic concepts and continuing
evidence-based research. Nurses use scientific theories to improve the quality of care for the
patients under their care and improve the practice of nursing as a field as a whole (Dunphy,
Winland-Brown, Porter & Thomas, 2015). Nursing involves the use of the patient-based nursing
care plan (NCP), which nurses follow in a well-established scientific manner (Dunphy, WinlandBrown, Porter & Thomas, 2015). As a consequence, it is apparent that nursing is based upon
evidence-based practice, scientific concepts, and technical know-how.
A nurse must also be knowledgeable about the various diseases and their mechanisms to
be an effective healthcare provided. Moreover, nurses need to be well versed in the various new
medications, new policies, and how they affect nursing practices and procedures (Palos, 2014).
Symptom assessment and management in various issues, such as nausea and pain, as well as
cancer and chemotherapy fatigue are areas to the development of which the nurse scientists have
provided considerable contributions (Palos, 2014). For instance, nurse scientist Chris
Miaskowski has contributed to nursing research by exploring the genetic markers for the pain

that patients experience during chemotherapy (Singh, Dhruva, Flowers, Kober, & Miaskowski,
2018). There is hope that by adding genetic information to self-reported symptoms, nurses will
be able to improve patient experience (Singh, Dhruva, Flowers, Kober, & Miaskowski, 2018).
The information procedures, the mechanisms, and information, as well as the new research into
emerging areas of patient outcomes all contribute to scientific ethos of nursing as a field of
health care.
Research in nursing has also led to a breakthrough on the best practices for transitional
care from hospitals to the community. This is an important facet of the healthcare provision as
there is a growing acceptance that transitional care is important for the long-term wellbeing of
the patients after they leave the hospital (Dunphy, Winland-Brown, Porter & Thomas, 2015).
The research that goes into fields as novel as these illustrates the scientific part of the nursing
profession.
It is also imperative to note that a nurse is required to have an excellent knowledge of the
complexities of the human body, which is concomitant to the scientific discipline of biology. It is
notable that before one becomes a nurse, they have to undergo training in various science
courses, such as anatomy, chemistry, and physiology as well as some behavioral sciences, such
as psychology (Bastable, 2017). The training in these scientific disciplines is essential in
practicing nursing and without a proper understanding of these areas, it would not be possible to
be an effective nurse (Bastable, 2017). Such considerations clearly illustrate that nursing is a
science.
The technological aspects of nursing are also a scientific part of the nursing profession.
Nurses typically have to use various implements in the course of their work. These include
medical implements, such as stethoscopes, infusion pumps, and traction devices among others

(Boonen, Vosman & Niemeijer, 2016). Nursing as a field now is completely reliant on
technology, unlike at the inception of the profession (Boonen, Vosman & Niemeijer, 2016).
Moreover, the field has even adopted electronic health records (Boonen, Vosman & Niemeijer,
2016). This reliance on specific equipment is a testament to a viewpoint that a nursing field is
more scientific in its application as opposed to artful.
Nursing, as majority of scientific disciplines, generates answers to questions about how
clinicians administer care and manage conditions through research. The questions to these
answers originate from unique nursing experiences and are focused on the detection,
comprehension, and response to the signs and symptoms that the sick experience (Dunphy,
Winland-Brown, Porter & Thomas, 2015). Due to the constant alarms, for instance, in an
Intensive Care Unit, a nurse can suffer from alarm fatigue that can lead to the nurse missing
important development in the condition of the patients. As a consequence, there is research to
engineering safer nursing care environments by collecting data points and using algorithms that
can better predict clinical events in a nursing environment (Boonen, Vosman & Niemeijer,
2016). It is apparent that nursing is science because the research involved in everyday practice is
meant to improve both the nurses’ experience and the patients’ outcomes.
Nursing as an art
On the other hand, nursing is also an art. Nurses master a plethora of knowledge about
the workings of the human body in their daily work and as they amass experience. However,
they also need to apply this knowledge insightfully (Dunphy, Winland-Brown, Porter & Thomas,
2015). It is the application of the information that they amass that constitutes the art of nursing.
The art part of nursing is the bridge through which the scientific knowledge of nursing is
transformed into patient care (Robinson, 2014). Nurses perform what one may term as relational

work. Daily, nurses have to transform the lives of their patients. The art of nursing involves the
nurse’s perception of the needs of the patient based on the conveyed conduct of the patient
(Robinson, 2014). It assists the nurse in connecting with the patient and during the provision of
nursing care. It calls for one to be immersive in the patient experience.
The art of nursing appears in the daily routine. It may be through the nurse’s ability to
develop the relationships not just with doctors and the nurse’s colleagues, but also through the
ability to build mutual trust with the patients and their families (Palos, 2014). The art of nursing
is also the ability of the nurse to understand, in an empathetic manner, the state of the patient,
what the patient is going through and to explain the state of the patient to the patient and the
family in a way that they can comprehend (Palos, 2014). This empathy establishes nursing as an
art.
The art of nursing is also apparent as an intuition that one develops through years of
experience in the healthcare industry. This empathy is achieved not through classroom lessons or
through reading requisite material on nursing, or even attending continuous development
courses, but through the experience that brings about unconscious competence (Palos, 2014) For
instance, this might manifest in cases where nurses know when a patient is about to go to the
dying phase, even without seeing the textbook signs of such a phase. The ability to discern such
situations is an art (Dunphy, Winland-Brown, Porter & Thomas, 2015). However, most of the
time, creativity will be apparent in how nurses apply nursing procedures. In some cases, nurses
are forced to make creative choices to save lives. For instance, sometimes, patients may need
immediate care in situations where medical equipment is not readily available (Robinson, 2014).
A nurse can, in such a situation, be forced by the circumstances to use creativity to save the life
of the patient.

The art in nursing may also become apparent as a balancing act in the workplace. For
instance, in some situations, a nurse will have two patients, with one in a worse condition than
the other. One will need to convey to the patient who is better off than his/her needs are valid and
that he/she is a valued patient, while at the same time putting energy and time into the patient
who is worse off (Robinson, 2014). The communication and the balancing act ensure that both
patients benefit from and feel cared for by the nurse. This is an artful communication and not
simply a mechanical purveying of information.
Conclusion
An analysis of nursing as a discipline shows that it incorporates both science and art in its
application. As a science, it uses defined methods to solve problems. During training as a nurse,
one has to undergo training in chemistry, as well as biological and behavioral sciences.
Moreover, nursing involves the application of evidence-based practices. The art part of nursing
involves the human aspects of the application of nursing knowledge in the interaction between
the nurse and the patient. The soft-skills involved in the application of the scientific knowledge
in nursing constitute the art. It is apparent that through experience, empathy, the balancing work
at the workplace, and the ability to deal with colleagues, doctors, patients, and their families the
nurses exhibit what would be considered an art as opposed to more research-based skills that
would be considered as a science. Thus, both the scientific and the art parts of nursing are
important for one to be an effective nurse.
