Using one of the films listed (or another appropriate movie) evaluate the scientific theory,
techniques or processes presented. Using the questions listed below to guide you and the
knowledge you have acquired over the course of the semester (information presented in the
text, lecture notes and other reference materials) thoroughly discuss, describe and evaluate
the films representation of genetic engineering.
• ( 20 pts) Summarize the plot of the film and how genetics fits into the theme(s). –HOW does
science factor into the film’s story? EDIT your work so that what you are trying to say is clear.
• ( 30 pts) Describe/evaluate the scientific theory/techniques used in the movie. –HOW did they
accomplish their genetic modifications? What type of modifications? Compare to what you
have learned about genetics and the associated technologies. Use examples from class
discussion, notes, etc. Research feasibility of the processes presented if needed. Can these
processes actually be done?
• ( 40 pts ) Articulate thoroughly the fallacies presented and what type they are, as listed in your
text, CHAPTER 6. There are likely to be MANY. Check the credits of the film for medical or
scientific advisors and their credentials.
• ( 70 pts )Discuss the social, cultural or political themes related to the scientific processes
presented. Should we use this sort of technology? Why or why not? What could be done with
this technology? For good or bad?
▪ Themes to consider: human identity; what makes us human, interference with
nature/natural processes, moral responsibility, ethical or legal ramifications,
long-term consequences, environmental impacts, etc.
• ( 40 pts ) What is your opinion of the piece? What questions did it raise? Did it affect/change
how you feel about the related genetics topics?
