Introduction
From Lecture 6, complete your Personal Leadership Development Plan (PLDP). In doing so,
you should integrate the lecture content, and assessment you have completed in the course. Be
sure to begin this process well in advance, so that you will have adequate time to think it
through and make changes as appropriate. Be as thorough and complete as possible in
developing your plan, even if this requires some speculation on your part about what lies ahead.
Discuss the areas of your development as a business leader that you plan to focus on in the
years ahead, and the steps you plan to take to become a more effective leader. When you
complete the final version of your PLDP, submit it electronically in the blackboard.
1.0 Define What Generally Makes a Great Business Leader (2.5 Marks)
Draw inspiration from the books reviews presentations and class discussions, make a list of top
10 qualities (with description) of leaders that you think make up the traits, competencies, and
experience of a good business leader.
The description word length is expected to be around 50-80 words/per each quality. Please
use your own words. (1/4 marks for each quality)
2.0 Identify Your Core Values (2.5 marks)
After identifying your core characteristics, identify your core values. Core values are the
principles you use to make decisions. They are the things that help you weigh choices in life
and are typically unwavering.
To help you identify what your core values might be, we’ve listed a few below. Choose 8–12
of the following values that are most important to you:
Achievement, Advancement, Adventure, Affiliation, Affluence, Authority, Autonomy, Balance,
Challenge, Collaboration, Community, Competency, Competition, Courage, Creativity, Duty,
Economic security, Enjoyment, Fame, Friendship, Health, Helping others, Humor, Influence,
Inner harmony, Integrity, Knowledge, Loyalty, Personal development, Responsibility, Selfrespect, Spirituality, Wisdom
From your selections, identify 5 as your main core values and describe them in your own

3.0 Write a Personal Mission Statement (1 mark)
A personal mission statement is a written-down reason for being and many believe it is the
key to finding your path in life. A mission statement is focused on the practice of what you
need to be doing. It seeks to answer the question, “Who am I and what is my higher calling?”
The personal mission statement will become your personal constitution — a physical reminder
for you to see where you’ve been, where you are, and where you want to go. By outlining your

mission, you will have something to look back on when it comes time to develop your goals
and write an action plan.

7. By breaking down your leadership components, you’ll have more insight into your strengths

5.0 Setting Personal Career/Business Objectives (3 marks)
Setting out your personal objectives (Listen to this to inspire yourself). These can also be set
in context within your current or future employment. Personal objectives: Where in my life do
I want to go? Make it SMART goals
SMART goals are:
Specific: Ask who, what, where, when, why, and which
Measurable: Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress; ask “How much?”, “How
many?”, and, “How will I know when it is accomplished?”
Attainable: Just about any goal can be attained when you plan steps wisely and establish a
realistic time frame; ask yourself what conditions would have to exist to accomplish the goal
Realistic: Goals should be things you are willing and able to work toward — things you believe
can be accomplished and that you actually want to accomplish
Timely: Goals should be grounded within a specific time frame
Short Term Goals (next 12 months) – at least 1
Medium Term Goals (next 2 – 3 years) – at least 1
Longer Term Goals (beyond 3 years) – at least 1
6.0 Creating an Action Plan (5 marks)
Using the prioritized personal leadership skills list you developed in section 4, write 5
leadership development goals (goals that are challenging) that will help you achieve your
career/business goals mentions in section 5
Remember, you do not need to embody every quality a great leader may have. Narrow down
which ones you should focus on by cross referencing them with your core values and personal
mission statement and career/business objectives. If a competency doesn’t align with your
career/business objectives, deprioritize or bag them altogether.
After choosing the top competencies/qualities of leaders you want to obtain create an action
plan lays out the specific steps you’ll take, resources you’ll use, and the support system you’ll
build to reach leadership development goals.
