I started the process of earning my doctorate a little later in life than other students. I was a married father with a preschool daughter (Sara).
Since my wife left for work early in the morning, it was always my duty to get up and get Sara’s day going in the right direction. In addition, I had
to do the same for myself. Three days of my week were spent on campus in class or in the library. (We didn’t have quick access to research on
home computers then as you do now.) The other two days of the workweek and the weekend were spent on household chores, family time, and
studying.
I knew that if I was to have any chance of finishing my Ph.D. in a reasonable amount of time, I had to adopt an effective schedule for managing
my time. Each day of the week, I held to a strict routine. I got up in the morning, ate breakfast while reading the paper, got Sara ready for school,
and got her to school. Once I returned home, I put a load of laundry in the washer, studied, wrote, and spent time concentrating on what I needed
to do to be successful from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. every day. At lunch, I had a pastrami and cheese sandwich and a soft drink while rewarding
myself by watching Perry Mason reruns until 1:00 p.m. I then continued to study until it was time to pick up Sara from school. Each night, I spent
time with my wife and daughter and then prepared for the next day. I lived a life that had a preset schedule. By following that schedule, I was able
to successfully complete my doctorate in a reasonable amount of time while giving my family the time they needed. (By the way, I still watch Perry
Mason reruns.)

2. Choose three forms of higher-level thinking from Chapter 4 (pg. 57) that you can employ
to use daily. Each form should include 4 or 5 sentences discussing how you can
implement it as you progress through your program at Trident. Utilize information from
the chapter as well to support your opinion.

The media is a powerful tool in health promotion. In order to effectively influence your target
population, you will need audience-specific resources. For instance, Media advocacy is used
when targeting policy makers, while social marketing is used to influence particular groups or
individuals’ behaviors.
1. Identify the steps you would take when designing a social media campaign (provide 5-6
steps, use your required readings as a guide, and use bold headings to clearly identify
each step.)
2. Describe each step you identified and its importance when designing a media campaign.
3. Identify which of the Responsibilities and Competencies of a health educator a media
campaign would address.
4. Describe at least 3 different budget strategies a health educator could use when
implementing a health communication plan.
Length: 2-3 pages (excluding the cover page and the reference list).

The Session Long Project entails you going through the process of influencing policymakers.
Review the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council Advocacy Toolbox. Read the “Writing to
government officials or lobbyists” and the “Opposing a Proposal” and the “Supporting a
Proposal” sample letters. Additionally, read “Changing public opinion” for this assignment.
1. Using the same topic from SLP 1, identify the level you wish to write to (local, state, or
national).
2. For this SLP assignment, choose whether you will be writing on “opposing a proposal” or
“supporting a proposal.”
3. Choose three key elements from “Changing public opinion” page and discuss how these
elements relate to influencing policymakers.
4. Discuss the role of collaboration in health communication and advocacy.
5. Write a one-page letter, that encompasses the information from the above 3 bullets (on
“opposing a proposal” or “supporting a proposal”).
Note: The first two pages must address above items 1-4. The third page is a one-page letter on
“opposing a proposal” or “supporting a proposal” and encompasses the information from your
required readings.
Length: 3 pages (excluding the cover page and the reference list).
