Course Description
This course focuses on state-of-the-art data techniques for creating effective visualizations for structured and
unstructured data. The course targets students who are interested in using visualizations to better understand information
and communicate with other people.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Obtain hands-on experience using Data Visualization software/programs
2. Understand the importance of context and audience
3. Determine the appropriate type of graph for your situation
4. Recognize and eliminate the clutter clouding your information
5. Direct your audience’s attention to the most important parts of your data
6. Think like a designer and utilize concepts of design in data visualization
7. Leverage the power of storytelling to help your message resonate with your audience

Technology Intensive, Hybrid, and Online Courses
This course will be technology intensive and will require students to have a functional laptop/notebook with necessary
software. For specific information, refer to the Required Texts/Readings section in this Syllabus.

All students must have a functional laptop in order to complete and submit assignments. The following software will be
required for the purpose of this class:
-Microsoft Word & Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher
-Power BI Desktop (More details to come for free download) only available on Windows computer
-Tableau (More details to come for free download)
Course Requirements and Assignments
Success in this course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of 45 hours
over the length of the course (normally 3 hours per unit per week with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or
preparation/studying or course related activities including but not limited to internships, labs, clinical practice. Other
course structures will have equivalent workload expectations as described in the syllabus.
Final Examination or Evaluation Information
There will be a Final Examination that will cover all topics discussed in the course. The Final Exam will consist of a
theoretical question and answer portion and a practical hands-on portion. Preparation for Final Exam will be provided
closer to the exam date.
The Final Exam will take place on Friday, May 15th 2020 from 7:15AM-9:30AM.
Grading Information
Determination of Grades
All assignments and project work must be submitted on time for full credit. Any late assignments will be deducted 25%
credit for every day late from the original due date, up to 3 days late max. There may be an opportunity for an extra credit
assignment as the class progresses.

Responsibilities:
We are seeking an entrepreneurial, data-driven Business Analyst to join our Strategy and Analytics team. The
Business Analyst will be instrumental in helping to analyze our business operations and identify opportunities for
the company to cost-effectively better serve our subscribers. The Business Analyst will also evaluate strategic
opportunities both inside and outside our company to drive growth. Successful candidates will possess deep
analytical capabilities, love working with data, and demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively across functional

Combine great data analytics skills with strong business acumen to provide insights that will drive company
growth
Work closely with our Operations team to provide ad hoc analyses, dashboards, and reports to improve

Work successfully across the organization to support implementation of key recommendations

Advanced modeling skills using Excel, scenario analysis, pivot tables
Enthusiastic and excited about data, especially to understand ways of how to apply it to unstructured business
questions

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presenting to executives
Proficient with Powerpoint or other presentation tools
Ability to work quickly and accurately on multiple projects concurrently, occasionally under tight timelines

Job 2: Data Analyst
About the Role
We are looking for an exceptional data analyst with 3-5+ years of experience to empower internal and
external products with actionable insights. You will be responsible for building this program from the
ground up: partnering with stakeholders, understanding all aspects of the products, interacting with crossfunctional business and technical teams, manipulating and analyzing data, and building metrics and
dashboards to influence and drive business decisions.
What Youll Do
Work from inception of a specified business problem identified by data to delivery of a solution
Identify opportunities to fix or improve processes that make the company better in the long term
Work closely with your team to put together seemingly disparate pieces of data, build out the data
pipeline and create interactive dashboards
Proactively communicate data methodology and results to a diverse set of stakeholders
Write queries, contribute to larger scale products/projects and perform ad hoc analyses as needed
Comfortable with working in fast-paced environments to find answers to critical questions with data
and be decisive in an ambiguous situation
What You’ll Need
4+ years in quantitative/analytic role, preferably within tech
3+ years experience with BI Tools such as Tableau, MicroStrategy, Power BI or Looker
SQL expert and general understanding of databases, data relationships and data integrity
Demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges
Strong communication skills and customer empathy, capable of pushing for the best solution with tact
Excellent planning and project management skills
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical field
Bonus Points if
Experience handling structured and unstructured data from internal and third party sources
Experience with Python, Javascript and R are plus
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
