Using the media of your choice (poster, Google Presentation, Video, Prezi…) create a product that can be used to educate someone on the following aspects of Blood:

Anatomy & Physiology of Red Blood Cells: where/how are they created? How does their structure (include picture) help with their function? How long do they live and how are they disposed of?

Blood Typing – possible blood types, antigens & antibodies for each, blood types each can receive (if receiving packed red cells), prenatal considerations

Anatomy & Physiology of White Blood Cells: where are they created? Picture and function of each type of WBC

Anatomy & Physiology of Platelets: where/how are they created? Picture of platelet and its function

Anatomy & Physiology of Plasma: what is in it? What are its different functions?

Hemostasis: the three phases and a brief description of what happens in each.

Your product should be designed so that you do not have to physically/verbally present it to the user. If you choose to make a video it should be your creation (not an information video you find on the web). Make sure your product is detailed enough that I can tell you thoroughly understand the topic.

Your project will be assessed using the rubric, below. You do not have to use any content sources other than your lecture notes and textbook. Your presentation should have an abundant number of pictures / visuals. Please include at least one relevant image per bullet item and provide the web links to pictures you include. These links do not have to be in APA format.

Part 2

Please use the following normal ranges when evaluating the patients in these cases:

Test Normal Range Units of Measure

Hgb female: 12-15, male: 14-18 g/dl

Hct female: 37-47, male: 40-54 %

WBC 4.5 – 11.5 109/L

Platelets 150 – 450 109/L

WBC Differential:

Neutrophils 50 – 70 %

Lymphocytes 18 – 42 %

Monocytes 2 – 11 %

Eosinophils 1 – 3 %

Basophils 0 – 2 %

RBC Morphology

Normocytic, normochromic

WBC Morphology:

normal

Case #1

Geoff is a 54 year old white man who was seen in the ER. He was homeless and with a history of alcoholism. He was brought to the hospital by the director of the homeless shelter. The director was concerned about allowing the man to stay at the shelter because he appeared seriously ill and might be infectious to others. Geoff was experiencing fever, chills and a deep productive cough. His CBC results were as follows:

Hgb 15 g/dl

Hct 41%

WBC 18.3 x 10^9/L

Plt 237 x 10^9/L

WBC Differential:

Neutrophils: 75%

Lymphocytes 15%

Monocytes 10%

Eosinophils 0%

Basophils 0%

RBC Morphology: Normocytic, normochromic

WBC Morphology: toxic granulation of neutrophils

1. Please list the abnormal test results and, if the result is numeric, indicate if it is abnormally high or low (2 points)

2.Based on the test results AND patient description, what is the most probable diagnosis? Please list one diagnosis but note that there is more than one correct answer (2 pts)

3.What PATIENT SYMPTOMS are directly related to the diagnosis? (2 pts)

4.List the TEST RESULTS directly related to the diagnosis. (2 pts)

Case #2

An 85 year old slender, frail white female visited her family physician for a routine physical. The physician noticed that the patient appeared pale. The patient complained about fatigue and noted that she generally felt well but admitted to feeling tired when climbing stairs. When the physician asked the woman what she normally ate, the woman responded “tea and toast.” The physician ordered a CBC and obtained the following results from the lab:

Hgb 9.8 g/dl

Hct 25.2%

WBC 5.9 x 10^9/L

Plt 383 x 10^9/L

WBC Differential:

Neutrophils: 70%

Lymphocytes 20%

Monocytes 8%

Eosinophils 2%

Basophils 0%

RBC Morphology: moderately hypochromic, moderately microcytic

WBC Morphology: normal

2.Based on the patient’s symptoms and the CBC results, what general condition is the patient suffering from? (2 pts)

3.What SYMPTOMS and TEST RESULTS lead you to this conclusion? (2 pts)

4..What is your best guess to the cause of the general condition named in question 2? What information led you to this conclusion? (2 pts)

Case #3

A 16 year old male was brought to his family doctor because he had been complaining of feeling tired and listless for several weeks. He noticed that he had increased bruising on his arms, legs and trunk. The physician ran a CBC with the following results:

Hgb 9.0 g/dl

Hct 27%

WBC 92.4 x 10^9/L

Plt 18 x 10^9/L

WBC Differential:

Neutrophils: 4%

The patient became faint and passed out several times. According to her husband, it was estimated that she might have lost about 3 units of blood. The patient was kept overnight for observation and sent home the next day. The results of her CBC done before she left the next day are below:
