Length/Due Date: approximately 1,000-1,400 words, due Sunday midnight Central Standard Time (CST).

Style/Format: This, as all essays in EN106, should be formatted in a standard scholarly format. (Most students follow MLA or APA guidelines, which are outlined in Easy Writer.) No matter what format you follow, be sure to do the following:

Use 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced.
Use 1-inch margins top, bottom, and sides.
Although no cover page is needed, you should include your name, my name, the course number/title, and date at the upper left-hand corner of the manuscript.

Research & Documentation: Include at least two additional sources beyond the sources cited in Essay #4. Your essay must include formal references to all sources. Be sure to provide in-text citations using a standard scholarly style, such as MLA or APA. And, of course, you must also provide appropriate documentation for any other sources you cite.

File format: Please submit your essay as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. These formats are available in most word processors, including Google Docs and Open Office, and will ensure that your instructor is able to comment on your work.

Works Cited/References: Your essay should include an appropriate bibliography, with an entry for each individual source you reference in the body of the essay.

Titles: Include a descriptive title at the beginning of your essay that tips your readers off to your thesis. Do not format your title with quotation marks, boldface, underlining or italics. Entering an Academic Conversation
We are confronted with many elements when it comes to our day to day intake and
environment; how production of food, distribution, and the impact of each affecting our
surroundings. Production of food isn’t always sustainable and if it is being produced on
agricultural land, it will contribute to global warming. Climate change influences the quality and
quantity of food that is produced, and global food production systems contribute to climate
change. And global warming is the most significant threat of this century and a population, the
global food sector is among the largest contributor to global warming but represents an
opportunity for us to reduce the outcomes of climate change, therefore we need to be aware how
our choices contribute to the changes in the world.
“The Climate Crisis at the End of Our Fork” by Anna Lappe, she points out that the
system of producing and distributing food across the globe is responsible for one-third of the
human-caused global warming effect. And greenhouse gases are the leading cause of climate
change and global warming. The livestock sector has a largest impact accounting for 18% of the
global warming effect. Lappe observed that majority of individuals ignored the impact of food
and say industrial emissions and automobiles are the major contributor to climate change, but 18
percent of global warming worldwide revolve around the livestock sector. The percentage will be
high because of human activity, which plays a significant role in the emission of greenhouse
gases harming the environment leading to climate change and global warming. A change of the
food system will contribute to a change in climate and global warming.
McKay Jenkins wrote “Can GMOs Be Sustainable” considered if genetically modified
foods (GMOs) can be regarded as sustainable. Genetically modified organisms will be highly
used in the farming industry, leading to the development of “natural” food products. Jenkins
mentioned of the Schmidts family and how of a significant contributor to the industrial food
system they are. And their farm has acquired recognition for its environmental stewardship
efforts. “They practice a wide range of soil conservation techniques… Rather than strip their
fields bare after a harvest, they leave withered plants to serve as “green manure.” They use
integrated pest management. Because they spray their weeds, the Schmidts don’t have to till their
soil, which means they can reduce their carbon footprint — both by driving their tractor less and
by leaving carbon in the soil, where it belongs. They plant cover crops, which both hold their soil
in place for future crops and prevent erosion.” (Jenkins, 2017). It may be impossible to achieve
zero impact on the climate, but there are actions which can be essential in limiting the impact of
the food system to climate change. However, arguments made that do not support GMO food
have led consumers to choose food products that have not been modified even though genetically
modified food will be nutritious. Industrial agriculture that revolves around genetically modified
organisms, growth hormones, and others do not harm the environment or the natural resources.
But people will still choose food products that are not sustainable as opposed to sustainable
products.
Michael Pollan’s “Why Bother?” posed a question about changing daily lifestyles to help
boost the sustainability of our planet. For example, the industrial food chain has contributed
significantly to global warming and climate change. He provided information on industrial food
chain and the impact of modern agri-business. He stated Wendell Berry’s views on modern
agribusiness how food production on the industrial scale can be observed as one of the main
contributors where global warming is concerned. And climate change will highly depend on
personal change, which will serve as the solution to global warming. He stated, “Personal
choices, no matter how virtuous cannot do enough. It will also take laws and money” (Pollan,
2008). Regulations is needed to solve this problem being faced by the world today. Industrial
food production has led to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions in the environment. This is a
factor where humans play a part of global warming contribution. Pollan mentioned how people
aren’t making changes in their life because they feel like it will not make any difference. He later
explains that every little difference count. He wants us to make changes now to better the world
we live in. Pollan addresses that every individual has personal responsibility in preventing
climate change. The act of growing some of their own food in a garden is geared towards
developing habits of minds. It is prevalent to do small acts that has a larger contribution than we
think to the world.
In conclusion, it is important how global warming and climate change indicate food
production and it will continue to be the leading cause of climate change and global warming.
While being a contributor to global warming, the agricultural sector also holds opportunity for
achieving sustainability. It is the best to reduce the effect of the industrial food chain on climate
change and global warming.
