HUSS 235 Bryant and Stratton Maslow Hierarchy of Needs during Crisis Intervention Paper Part 1
Directions
As weve seen thus far, the primary focus of a crisis interventionist is to ensure the safety of all involved in the crisis situation. Weve examined the theories, models, and strategies necessary to intervene successfully in a crisis, as well as examined the essential characteristics of crisis intervention workers. Next, we will review the specific dynamics of crisis case handling.
Abraham Maslow (1970) wrote concerning a hierarchy of needs. Meeting the basic physical needs of food, clothing, and shelter were first on his list. This is an important concept, particularly in the field of crisis intervention. According to Gilliland and James (2013) paramount in psychological first aid is attending to Maslows needs hierarchy and taking care of survival needs first. Many counselors, social workers and psychologists helped meet basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and other survival needs during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina before they did any counseling (p. 19).
Using Maslows hierarchy of needs as a reference, explain why you feel its important to have an understanding of this hierarchy in relation to the field of crisis intervention. Predict some of the pitfalls even experienced crisis workers could fall into without knowledge of basic human needs when intervening on a clients behalf.

What tools of the trade were demonstrated by the worker?
How were safety concerns addressed? How was mobility determined?
What was the crisis workers level of involvement and how did the level of involvement change throughout the interview? What factors determined whether the crisis worker took a directive, collaborative, or non-directive approach?
From the hybrid model of crisis intervention, what tasks can be identified that took place during the intervention?

Deadline
Due by the end of Week 4 at 11:59 pm, ET.
Directions
This week, you have the opportunity to prepare your responses to the essays for the
exam next week. Prepare your responses in a Word document. You will then be able to
copy and paste them into the corresponding questions in the Midterm Exam given in
Week 4.
Answer the following essay questions in paragraph form, about 200 words each. Please
include in-text citations from at least one different resource in each question:
?
Discuss the characteristics of effective crisis workers and what skills are
necessary to effectively intervene in a crisis.
?
Taking a multiculturalist perspective, review the following scenario and write a
brief response on what you think would be important points for the crisis worker
handling the case to consider. What might some of the culturally biased
assumptions be in this case? What might be an appropriate response given the
situation?
Cho and his family are immigrants from Burma and involved in a refugee resettlement with
your agency. Cho and his son speak fairly good English; however his wife speaks only
Burmese. Prior to coming to the US, the family lived in a work camp along with their
extended family members (with whom they lost contact when they emigrated from Burma).
The work camp was horrendous – little food, inadequate shelter, and abusive work
conditions. It has come to your attention that Chos ten- year-old son got into a fight with
another peer while at school yesterday and apparently the parent of this child came to Chos
home earlier today and beat him up pretty badly. The police were contacted by a neighbor
and little more information is available. Cho recently began a new job and is now unable to
work, due to his injuries. Chos wife came to the agency worker visibly upset and crying.
The family is already having difficulty paying the rent and utilities.
