Richland College SCS Curve Number Runoff & Rational Method Paper SCS Curve Number, Runoff, Rational Method, Open Channel Flow and Weirdthis is a Design Project on Hydrology (civil Engineering). you will need some do some research online about this project, the location must be on the area indicate in the assignment. Design Project
Assigned: Lesson 16
Due: Lesson 24
Topic: SCS Curve Number, Runoff, Rational Method, Open Channel Flow, Weirs
Objectives:
This project will enable students to:
1. Demonstrate their ability of working and collaborating in teams.
2. Intensify their ability of searching and researching to obtain needed data.
3. Enhance their ability of working with engineering design manuals.
4. Strengthen their ability of preparing an engineering project report.
5. Explain the techniques used for estimating hydrologic and hydraulic parameters.
6. Apply theoretical knowledge into practice.
7. Calculate rainfall runoff.
8. Design hydraulic structures.
9. Give a presentation online.
Purpose:
The purpose of this design project is to:
1. Instill within students the importance of working in teams, searching and researching, using
technology and engineering software, preparing an engineering project report, and giving
a presentation online.
2. Estimate rainfall runoff and design hydraulic structures.
Procedure:
1. In the greater Tyler area, find an urban rainfall catchment basin/site that is less than 200
acres (e.g. commercial strip, school campus, hospital, residential subdivision, etc.). Search
online to find contours for your site. Delineate (i.e. draw) the drainage basin and site using
AutoCAD
2. Search online, reliable sources (including design manuals) to obtain data needed for
calculating rainfall runoff and designing hydraulic structures (such as TxDOT’s design
manuals, which also include IDF curves).
1
3. Estimate rainfall runoff (peak flow rate, Q) of the site using the Rational Method.
4. Estimate the volume of rainfall runoff using the SCS curve number method.
5. Using Q from point 3, design a trapezoidal unlined channel (earth) using the maximum
velocity provided during lecture. Provide a cross section (with dimensions) of your
designed channel using AutoCAD. Also, provide a cost estimate for your channel. An
example is provided below:

Note: these values and costs are hypothetical. Please use real costs found online or
elsewhere.
6. Using the same Q from point 3, design a rectangular lined channel (concrete) using the
maximum velocity provided during lecture. Provide a cross section (with dimensions) of
your designed channel using AutoCAD. Also, provide a cost estimate for your channel.
7. For the lined channel from point 7, design a rectangular sharp-crested suppressed weir.
Provide a cross section (with dimensions) of your designed weir using AutoCAD. Also,
provide a cost for the material and installation of your designed weir.
8. Using the volume of rainfall runoff from point 5, design a retention pond using the
necessary design manuals (e.g. City of Tyler retention pond design criteria, etc.). Provide
aerial and cross section views (with dimensions) of your designed retention pond using
AutoCAD. Also, provide a cost estimate for your designed retention pond.
Deliverables
Each team must submit a design project report that includes table of contents, introduction,
explanation, description, design criteria, formulas, calculations, references, drawings,
tables, charts, etc. An example of a drainage study conducted in Tyler, TX is provided on
Canvas.
Each member of the team must participate in each step and activity of the project.
O
Each student’s grade is proportional to his/her input to the project.
O
Each team must submit a log at the end of their project report showing the level of
effort each student provided to contribute to the project. The summation of total
