Should Drug Testing be Mandatory for Welfare Recipients?
Thesis:
Drugs testing should not be mandatory for welfare recipients because it is discrimination,
can potentially bring more harm, and they are not more likely to do drugs then individuals not
receiving welfare.
Fendrich, M., Johnson, T. P., Wislar, J. S., Hubbell, A., & Spiehler, V. (2004, February 2). The
utility of drug testing in epidemiological research: results from a general population
survey. Retrieved from https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/j.13600443.2003.00632.x
In this scholarly journal article, the authors discuss various statistical answers
to a large survey given to welfare recipients in the Chicago area. There were
approximately 627 randomly selected participants and the results were not found to
be shocking by the author. For example, marijuana within the survey was found to
have been reported vocally at a higher rate then on the drug test, meaning the use of
marijuana was not recent (Fendrich, Johnson, Wislar, Hubbell, & Spiehler, 2004).
This piece of writing can be used to argue my thesis by providing information that
shows just how low of a number of welfare recipients use drugs. In these low
numbers, the drug use is recreational and mainly only marijuana, which is now being
accepted in the United States.

Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients

In this article found online, the author researched the idea of drug testing for
welfare recipients. Instead of simply coming up with a study, this piece of literature has
information published from various states all throughout the United States. This is very
useful, because, it can be used as an example of why drug testing should not be mandatory.
A lot of the examples from many states do not allow drug testing to be mandatory because
it is discriminatory. Instead, the article discusses various public assistance programs in
place in each state. In my paper this could be used for the conclusion paragraph as a ‘call
to action’ for the readers.
Heflin, C. M., Siefert, K., & Williams, D. R. (2005, May 31). Food insufficiency and women’s
mental health: Findings from a 3-year panel of welfare recipients. Retrieved from
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953605001796
This third journal article combines two types of information, statistical and
testimonial. In this study, there were three women participating in welfare programs. They
were required to record their burdens with food and the government. Although this study
does not immediately discuss drug testing, in some of the surveys some of the women stated
that they were afraid they would be tested, and their benefits be taken away. I plan to use
this in argument to sway the audience with her emotional testimonial and also by allowing
the readers to know that the information came directly from a study so it should be
credible! In the abstract, the authors stated, “Data were obtained from a prospective
survey of women who were welfare recipients in an urban Michigan county in February
1997” (Heflin, Siefert, & Williams, 2005). The only potential issue that rises with using this
information is how old it is, the study was completed in 2005, over a decade and a half ago.
So is it still relevant?
