Should the United States Get Rid of the Electoral College?
Thesis Statement: The United States of America should get rid of the Electoral College because
it undermines Americans’ democratic right to vote and hence undermining the democratic values
of the country.
DePass, M., & Allen, S. (2018). America’s Electoral College: A Relic of Slavery and Fear-Based
Compromise Must Change!
This document will be valuable in supporting the argument since it gives examples of
instances when the Electoral College undermined the popular vote, times when the votes of the
Americans did not count due to the Electoral College. The Electoral College takes away the
power of citizens to choose their preferred president. For example, of the past five presidential
elections, the Electoral College decided the outcome of two. In 2016, Donald Trump lost in the
national popular vote but went on to become the president of the US. In “the 2016 presidential
election of Donald Trump, like the 2000 election of George W. Bush… the system, only applied
to the election of our president, ushered both men into the Oval Office despite losing the national
popular vote to their competitors” (DePass & Allen, 2018). The Electoral College undermines
the “one person, one vote” principle.
Dufour, F. (2018). Is the US Electoral College a Polite Fiction That Should Be
Abolished?. Available at SSRN 3082282.
This source will be important in supporting the argument because it provides testimonial
evidence that Americans in the past have been hurt by the policies set by the college-elected
presidents and are still being hurt today will the election of Donald Trump. He highlights some
significant failures that have been witnessed in the past in the regimes of college-elected

presidents. For example, during the George W. Bush regime, democracy could not advance
because of various reasons including “controversial assertion of executive power, 45 million
Americans without health insurance, and skyrocketing deficit” among others (Dufour, 2018).
From the examples given in this source, the presidents elected by the Electoral College tend to
have similar characteristics, which in turn hurt the citizens. The abolishment of the Electoral
College will protect the citizens from been hurt by the policies set by the college-elected
presidents.
West, D. M. (2020). It’s time to abolish the Electoral College. Brookings Institution Press.
This source will be important in supporting this argument because it provides statistics on
people’s opinions concerning the Electoral College. The majority of the American population
has opposed the Electoral College for years, and hence it’s time to have the Electoral College
abolished. “In 1967, 58 percent favored its abolition, while in 1981, 75 percent of Americans did
so” (West, 2020). Today, Americans still want the Electoral College to be abolished. Polls
conducted by Morning Consult and POLITICO in 2019 showed that 50% of the respondents
were for the direct popular vote, and 34% were against direct popular vote (West, 2020). This is
an indication that the people do not want the Electoral College to make electoral decisions for
them, and hence it is time to abolish the Electoral College.
