*The values for each patient in columns B, C, and D are the
number of years since last mammogram
Chapter 12: 1-Way Anova Excel
The data is a subset of large dataset from a study involving female patients at a New York City
hospital. In particular, the included data is a record of the Number of Years since last
mammogram for females across three income levels.
The researcher wanted to see if income might be a proxy for other factors that influenced how
long women took between mammograms and (when checked across another set of data)
whether these women were equally likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
STEPS
1. Open the Excel Sheet.
2. Click on the Data Tab ? Data Analysis ? Select Anova: Single Factor
Pop Up Box Inputs
A. Input Range: $B$3:$D$43 (Include the Income Levels as Labels. Do NOT include the
Patient column.)
B. Grouped by Columns (Default Choice)
C. Labels in the first row
D. Alpha = .05
E. Output Range: Anywhere other than over the data set
F. OK
3. Format:
A. Column widths so all headings are legible
B. Numbers to 3 decimal places
C. Delete:
a) the empty row between Anova: Single Factor and SUMMARY
b) one of the two empty rows between the first table and the word ANOVA of
the second table so there is only one empty row between tables
c) the empty row (if there is one) between the Within Groups and Total in the
Anova table

Terms:
1. Classification Variable the overarching nominal level descriptor (other names: Factor or
Treatment). The 1 in 1-way refers to the classification variable
2. Categoriesthe individual sample names
3. Criterion Variablethe variable being tested/compared (other name: Variable of Interest)
4. SStotaltotal variation for all data points and all samples (SS = Sum of the Squares)
5. SSbetweenvariation due to the classification variable (SS = Sum of the Squares)
6. SSwithinvariation due to chance (SS = Sum of the Squares)
7. Sum of the Squaresthe numerator of the variance = ?(?? ? ??? )2 . Note: The equation has ?
and 2, and thus Sum of the Squares

SS column and DF column are additive. As in the drawing the lines of SSbn and SSw/n = SStotal.
DF:
n = # of categories and nt = total # of data points
SS ÷ DF = MS
MSbn ÷ MSw/n = F (Test Statistic)
F Crit: The F table requires 2 DF values to determine the Critical Value. Use DF bn and DF w/n.
