WEEK 3’S ASSIGNMENT
Your goal. Your goal for Week 3 is to visit LIRN and locate 4-6 articles and produce an annotated bibliography of:
•
•
One merger and acquisition-related peer-reviewed journal article you would like to deconstruct. This article will be
referred to as the selected journal article.
Three to five articles, from peer-reviewed journals, assisting with the deconstruction of the selected journal article.
These articles will be referred to as supporting sources.
How to Search for Articles at LIRN provides a series of helpful videos showing how to search for peer-reviewed journal article at
LIRN. If you have difficulties locating business journals at LIRN, then click Subject View
and scroll down until you see the Business section.
Produce an annotated bibliography for all 4-6 journal articles, in APA format, using the advice at this link. Remember, an
annotated bibliography is a list of references and their brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the
annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. If
you need advice on reading/reviewing an article, then check out How to Read a Scholarly Publication and Excellent Advice on
Reading Articles (PDF).
You may view and download a sample annotated bibliography at this link.
Submit the annotated bibliography to Week 3’s Assignment portal.
WEEK 4’S ASSIGNMENT
Required Materials. You will need the following materials:
•
•
•
•
•
Week 2’s Assignment
Week 3’s selected journal article
Week 3’s supporting sources
Week 3’s annotated bibliography
A copy of the outline template
Your goal. Your goal for Week 4 is to deconstruct Week 3’s selected journal article using the strategy you learned during Week
2’s Assignment and produce an outline of a deconstruction essay using the outline template. Outlines not utilizing the template
will receive zero points and be returned to the student.
The outline must meet the following requirements:
Requirement 1. Deconstruct the selected journal article using deconstruction strategy you learned during Week 2’s
Assignment.
Requirement 2. The outline must support the creation of an evidence-supported 7-9-page deconstruction essay.
Requirement 3. All sources from Week 3’s Assignment must be cited in the outline.
Requirement 4. The outline must be APA formatted.
Requirement 5. The outline must include the annotated bibliography created for Week 3’s Assignment.
Remember, Step 3 in Week 2’s Assignment had you consider the following questions helping you identify a weakness in an
article:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Does the author provide a summary of the larger problem under study and the specific topic/problem under
investigation?
Is the problem significant from a practical or applied perspective?
Does the author fail to support their position/thoughts using other sources?
Is the source or author biased? If so, how?
Identify assumptions that are stated explicitly by the author. Do you agree? What implicit assumptions exist? Are they
acceptable?
Does the author rely on data or use their intuition? Does the presented data make sense?
Does the author make a well-supported conclusion? Why or why not?
Does the author acknowledge other viewpoints?
You may find the above questions useful during Week 4’s Assignment.

WEEK 5’S ASSIGNMENT
Your goal. Your goal for Week 5 is transforming Week 4’s Assignment into a 7-9-page deconstruction essay of the selected
journal article. (The annotated bibliography and title pages do not count toward the page count requirement.)
Remember, there is no correct method for writing a deconstructive essay, but most deconstructive essayists tend to follow these
steps:
•
•
•
Open with one introductory paragraph serving to introduce the essay while concluding upon the thesis statement
stating the weakness of the selected journal article.
Dedicate one or two paragraphs to explaining the utility and appropriateness of deconstruction to this assignment.
The body of the essay should be dedicated to a discussion demonstrating the weakness of the selected journal article.
(You should cite your supporting sources!)
•
•
•
After clearly articulating and discussing the weakness, offer one recommendation helping fix the weakness in the
selected journal article. (You should cite your supporting sources!)
A segment discussing how your recommendation improves the selected journal article and what you learned while
engaging this assignment.
A short reflective discussion of the novel insights you uncovered while deconstructing the selected journal article and
whether you would like to research them in the future.
CUNY provides ideas helping writers transform their outlines into paragraphs—it is a handy resource accompanying their advice
on proofreading and revising. Remember—everything needs to be APA-formatted and you must cite/reference all sources
appearing in your essay.
Submit the deconstruction essay to Week 5’s Assignment portal.
Happy deconstructing!
