Research Project: Description and Work Schedule
Throughout the semester you have been writing about the history we are learning. Each week you have
written Weekly Reflective Essays and contributed to the Primary Source Analysis discussion. Your final
piece of writing will build on all this work by examining a specific topic, of your own choosing, in greater
depth. The final paper will be 5-8 pages in length and will draw upon research you conduct after you
have identified your topic and, if possible, work you have done already. For example, you may want to
build your final project upon a Weekly Reflective Essay contribution, or expand upon an exchange in a
Primary Source Analysis discussion. Similarly, you may discover a topic, and sources to use, while
browsing the web for a weekly assignment.
You will use at least TWO primary sources and TWO secondary sources to complete the final
project. The primary sources you will analyze from a historical point of view to establish how they help
to understand and explain the historical events you engage in the project.
The specific deadlines for each part of the project are posted below. The Research Project will be worth
30% of your final course grade.
WORK SCHEDULE AND DUE DATES FOR FINAL PROJECT
Sunday, Week 9: Identify the Question and Primary Source(s). Think of a larger question that
you want to answer or that came up while reading a primary source we’ve analyzed for class. You will
be able to draw upon all the work you’ve done to that point, but you are also free to choose a topic
that we may not have studied. However, all topics need to be cleared with me before you go further
with the assignment. You will post your proposed topic, specifying why you are interested in the topic
and what you would like to concentrate on. Be as specific and narrow as possible in your focus to avoid
being too vague in your approach. I will comment on your choice and make suggestions.
Sunday, Week 11: Annotated Bibliography with Primary and Secondary Sources. Your
project must use a minimum of four sources. All sources must be clearly identified and properly cited.
You will write up an analysis of the usefulness of each source. Make sure to write out your analysis in
paragraph form. See this online source for more information on annotated bibliographies.
Sunday, Week 13: Post your First Draft. Analyze the four (or more) sources you’ve chosen
evaluating the intentions, context, etc. They will be reviewed with comments during the following week.
Sunday, Week 15: “Final Paper” is due. Revise your paper based on feedback and submit your final
version, including your updated annotated bibliography. The final paper should be 5-8 pages in length.
Sunday, Week 15: “Reflection” discussion is due. Reflect on your experience with your research
project, final paper, and share what you have learned about history over the course of the
semester. (Note: this is a separate 2% of your course grade, so make sure you complete it!)
