University of South Florida Relevance of LEAN Six Sigma Discussion What do you think the future of LEAN Six Sigma will be? Will it continue, or is it a dying idea?Based on the continuum of the pursuit of perfection, is it possible that someone is in process of conceptualizing the next Continuous Improvement Initiative that will be more powerful and effective than LEAN Six Sigmawrite 1 page approx 250 words minimum and 2 samples are uploaded Discussion samples
Thomas Edison is supposed to have said in November of 1895 that, It is apparent to
me that the possibilities of the aeroplane, which two or three years ago were thought to
hold the solution to the [flying machine] problem, have been exhausted, and that we
must turn elsewhere. Lord Kelvin, in that same year said, I can state flatly that heavier
than air flying machines are impossible. In a gesture of hope that I will not succumb to
the same mistake these brilliant men made, I will not say that it is impossible that some
future system will drive LEAN Six Sigma into the dustbin of history. I will say that I find it
hard to imagine. Nevertheless, I will try.
If we analyze the incentives involved, namely producing a product or service that
someone is willing to pay for and making a profit, it seems pretty straightforward that
efforts toward continual improvement and waste reduction will continue to be used and
developed. Whether those efforts are recognizable as LEAN or Six Sigma efforts
remains to be seen. It is difficult to predict what the future of these ideas will be, but I
suspect they will persist in one form or another for as long as there are competitive
industries.
Perhaps the greatest danger to the survival LEAN and Six Sigma is one of accessibility.
There remains a large number of people who are ill-equipped to understand and apply
the concepts involved as a result of a lack of interest or intellectual capacity. The
greatest risk LEAN and Six Sigma face is of being supplanted by more-accessible
versions of more-or-less the same tools and ideas. If there is a reformulation that
captures the interest or reduces the requisite brain power of prospective students, then
LEAN and Six Sigma might lose substantial ground as the industry-standard for process
improvement.
More likely, in my view, is that LEAN and Six Sigma education will apply its own tools
and techniques to itself, carving out extraneous material and leaving only the few
concepts that represent the majority of the process improvement capability and
analyzing and improving the modes of information delivery to maximize engagement,
enthusiasm, and competence of students.
The Lean and the six sigma approaches consider all the business aspects which are
vital for the growth of any organization. Reflecting upon its popularity to produce positive
results to many companies, there are absolutely no signs that the lean six-sigma
approach is fading away soon. For instance, by practicing the six-sigma approach,
many companies that were making losses because of inventory models, have restored
and come out of their losses by formulating a perfect strategy. These minute indications
are delineating that Six Sigma approach is not fading away any sooner. It is going to
remain at the forefront until any other effective models are being introduced which can
be proven to be more effective than the six sigma approaches.
Lean Six Sigma is about adding value to the customer by the data-driven approach. As
we are moving into an era of data-based decision making and an era where the
customer is the center point, Six Sigma will find its way in everyday management.
Another reason why six sigma approach is going to stay put is that a lot of organizations
are training their younger employees according to the six sigma principles thinking that
it would be profitable to them in the longer run. Hence, it could be witnessed that the
younger generation of the employees is surely going to stop the six sigma from fading
away.
Undoubtedly six sigma approaches are difficult to implement in some settings because
of the usage of more resources and complexity. Further, it is a top-down approach
making it difficult to convince the management regarding the costs. Nevertheless, its
bottom line is continuous improvement. Even when the next better thing that comes
over from the six-sigma, would somewhat resemble the core values of six sigma.
Therefore, it does reduce the principles and essence of six sigma, after all, it is based
on a set of statistical tools that designs an overall improvement strategy.
