This assignment will be uploaded into the course as either a document or photo attachment, your choice. You will find a sample poem diagram on the Samples page within the unit module – please look at it first before you attempt your own diagram here.

You will need to be sure to use and apply – through careful and comprehensive labeling on your poem – as many of the vocabulary terms as you can from these two sources in the unit’s required reading: the Poem Vocabulary sheet in the unit, and the Deconstruction vocabulary in the glossary at the end of Chapter 5 in Texts and Contexts. Please also be sure to have looked both “How to Read a Poem” resources within the unit module materials as well, as these will help you tremendously in deciphering your poem/song selection for this assignment and for your essay.

There are two ways to complete this assignment:
Type the poem or song into a document file, annotate it, and then upload that document here as a DOC, DOCX or PDF file.
Alternately, you may wish to annotate by hand, directly on a printed version with a pen or pencil, take a picture of that poem or song diagram with your smartphone or camera, and upload that picture file here as a picture file (JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc.).

Either of these methods is fine and I will accept any file format this time as long as the diagram is thorough and legible once reproduced on the computer screen.

Please read and study closely all of poems and songs from your self-selected collection(s) before you choose one for your diagram here. It’s imperative that you choose a piece that you like and feel you understand pretty well – that will make the diagramming work you do here much easier. And remember that the piece you diagram MUST also be the one you go on to analyze in your unit essay.

This assignment is meant to help you explore all the dimensions of the poem or song and to give you practice articulating those in advance of your essay. If you are able to identify all of the working parts of your piece and also isolate the points at which you might begin to pull it apart it and read it against itself here, you will be able to analyze and deconstruct it much more effectively in your essay.

To receive credit your diagram must be at least a full page of fully annotated poem or song text, appropriately using as many of this unit’s poetry and Deconstruction vocabulary terms as you can (within the confines of what your chosen poem has to offer in terms of diversity of form and language of course). It’s worth 20 points and is due on the date indicated above. -d

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. The first two stanzas are a contrast between a free birds to a caged bird Blue and bold phrases: use of scent, sense sound imagery The caged bird sings of things unknown with a fearful trill but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. The second stanza is an allusion to the historical event between the White oppressors and the African-Americans. The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. The uses of metaphor (without using as or like to compare) 1 The fifth and the last stanza are the use of reiteration. The uses of “ trill,” “ still,” and “ hill” indicate a sporadic rhyme The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. The last stanza is a repetition of the third stanza; seems like it is the chorus of this poem The tone of voice: tragedy, sorrow, melancholy, woe The point of view: an omniscient, third person point of view The poem is about a caged bird that is longing for freedom. It’s also an allusion to the historical mistreatment of African Americans in America. Note: The red bold words are the vocabulary that are used to analyze this piece 2 List of Poems 1.
