PUBH 8003 West Coast Week 6 Plagiarism Spectrum & Academic Violation Paper The Plagiarism Spectrum

One of the aspects of scholarly work is giving attribution to ideas and information sources that you use—giving credit where it is due. Failure to do so diminishes your credibility and violates the principles of academic integrity. Plagiarism is the presentation of work done by others as your own work without giving credit. This can occur deliberately or inadvertently, but in either case, it is a violation of academic integrity.

Subject: plagiarism carries consequences

Greetings to all.

Mosaic Plagiarism

Paraphrasing plagiarism

In listing a few types of plagiarism and has falling within this trap myself as an undergrad student before and received a failing grade for the term, I strongly suggest to everyone to brand this quote on your heart “Lean not on your own understanding” (King James Bible ,1996, Prov. 3: 5). when it comes to plagiarism, utilize what tools your school has provided to check your work its healthily and will let you sleep at night.

My issue was using my own work over two years after writing a term paper on The Movement of Malaria and its Strings. A very hard lesson to learn and to live with, the penalty for not-knowing is the same for knowing, reed the APA manual over and over if need to, know it, ask questions if you have doubt (Smith, 2007). I did get through all, had to take a six-week course on both APA and AMA.

Giving credit to someone for their hard-earn work and timely reaches should be like 1, 2, 3; but not so fast, there are doers and takers. A doer believes in working for their honor without bragging or boasting, on the other hand a taker dose just what the term mean takes, sneak, copy or steel regardless of the consequences (Barrie & Presti, 2000). I was blessed and was able to recover and correct my mistake.

This is a great question Dr. Leischner! I think it is sometimes hard to judge when to cite or not, and the more I learn about it, the better I am at navigating authorship and citing quoted content. Understanding the use of references also takes time. The availability of new software programs to electronically monitor and detect plagiarism is important especially with the easy online access to peer-reviewed content and data. In the review article by Hunt, the authors compared to the utility of SafeAssign compared to Turnitin (Hunt, 2014) and both were useful in identifying plagiarized text. The authors did caution the reader that a suggested use of institutional funding would be to teach students to better paraphrase and to develop their citations skills when writing, as opposed to paying for plagiarism software.

As far as interpreting the results of the reports produced by these tools and software packages, I’m pretty comfortable understanding the report generated. They are clearly labeled and defined to help the reader navigate the different areas of the evaluation. The online help associated with Blackboard platform (Blackboard, n.d.) gives a nice overview of how to review these reports and adds context to the areas that are checked (e.g., overall text matching, originality, etc.) which makes me more comfortable with the SafeAssign reporting as we continue to hone our report writing skills.

The idea of plagiarism in academia has had many poor outcomes for certain researchers (Roberts, 2018). I think we are all greatly aware of the consequences. One of the many plagiarism practices I see when reviewing an article is not citing oneself (Winsett, 2017). It can be very difficult to think that a person needs to credit themselves but the central idea for this need is to actually recognize the work even if it is your own.

For me, I unintentionally tend to commit the “404 error” violation. Not very often but sometimes I will cite an author in-text but forget to add the actual citation to the references or vice versa. This is obviously not an intent to plagiarize but it can have daunting implications to how I pay attention to detail. One of the ways I have worked on doing this better is to bold the in-text citations and at the very end cross-reference with my citation list. I have also found that citation tools such as endnote (endnote, n.d.) and refworks help me keep the organization on parr.

In 1997 the Turnitin software application was developed with the primary focus of comparing written content to any previous content (Meo & Talha, 2019). The development of software programs that detects unauthenticated writing aids in lessening the overall threat of scholarly integrity (Meo & Talha, 2019). An excuse for ignorance is unacceptable in the academic world when it comes to plagiarism (Meo & Talha. 2019). An academic must always operate with conscientious honesty. Turnitin identifies ten of the most common forms of plagiarism: I fell prey to #9 Aggregator (Turnitin – the Plagiarism Spectrum, n.d.).

The university I attended for my master did not offer programs like SafeAssign. Neither did the students have the option to submit assignments to Turnitin. However, because the assignment I submitted failed to include more of the original work, I was placed on academic warning. The Turnitin percentage was 54 percent. I was stunned! I did not so much as fell to include original work, but the paper was about a couple of laws currently under legislature review. At the time, I thought it was okay to write the pending proposal as it was because I needed to relay the exact context of it. I did not want to subtract from the intent of the legislation. It was a hard lesson learned. Since then, I try to avoid direct quotes. I make sure to rewrite the sentence and not use any of the original words in the sentence. If I must use some of the words, I make sure it is less than five words. Lastly, I cite everything, even if I think it was my original thought.
