Upload your first paper to this Dropbox. You must upload your paper in.doc or.docx format by the assigned deadline in your syllabus. Make sure you write your paper on the assigned Chapter (6)
only (from the Major Problems text)
Directions (as found in the syllabus):
2 Short Paper Assignments:
You will be analyzing historical essays and primary source documents relevant to U.S. History from the time periods discussed in this class (Colonial Era to 1877). All of these documents are located in
the Major Problems text. When reading the chapters, start with the introduction to the chapter, then move on to the scholarly essays (which are at the end of the chapter), and then go back and conside
the primary sources (listed in each chapter as “documents”).
You will read two different historical essays with differing viewpoints from the assigned readings in each chapter assigned. Based on your reading of both essays and the relevant primary source
documents, your task is to write a short essay (at least five paragraphs) that addresses each of the following for the Chapter assigned for each paper:
• Decide which historian’s viewpoint is most appealing to your understanding of the events
• MAKE AN ARGUMENT by using a clear and concise thesis statement as to which essay you prefer and why (giving a historically sound reason; avoid using the first person, i.e. “I”!).
Use at least two primary source documents and one essay in your paper (citations required).
• Properly cite each article and source in support of your argument using the Chicago style (footnotes). See the guides available on Canvas in your module.
• Acknowledge the opposing argument and discuss why you disagree or supported it less than the other offered argument (avoid using the first person, i.e., “1”).
• Turn in a digital copy of your paper to Canvas by the specified due date; no paper copies will be accepted.
