Hot Coffee Debate
AGAINST
This debate you will argue against Mrs. Liebeck (in favor of McDonald’s).
The position you have been assigned may not agree with your viewpoint or
opinion. Debating the viewpoint you disagree with can help broaden your
understanding.
This case is very familiar to most people: Mrs. Stella Liebeck and her nephew go to a
McDonald’s drive-through. She orders a cup of hot coffee which is subsequently spilled
in her lap causing serious burn injuries.
Read Case Study 21 McDonald’ sThe Coffee Spill Heard’ Round the World and watch
the Documentary’ Hot Coffee’ clips to help prepare. For the debate, additional
research will be necessary beyond the material presented in the case study and the
videos to gain additional perspectives.
Note: Even though the reading includes a case study, this is NOT a case analysis
assignment.
See the attachment for the textbook page 701 for the case study
Determine which side you are to argue based on the first letter of your last name.
Write a discussion post (no more than 400 words) setting out your argument as to
whether or not the case was frivolous. Use facts from credible sources to make your
points. You can also bring in examples from other cases. Start your message with
either “IN FAVOR” or “AGAINST” so that your classmates will know which side you are
arguing.
Address the following questions:
What are the arguments for Mrs. Liebeck?
What are the arguments for McDonald’s?
Is the case frivolous? Why or why not?
Is Mrs. Liebeck at fault?
Is McDonald’s at fault?
Were any precedents set either before or after this case?
Does issues management play a role? If so, how?
Should any damages be paid to Mrs. Liebeck?
What is the role of the media in this case?
How does tort reform affect consumers and businesses?
Would the outcome of this case be different if it were to occur today?
ASSIGNMENT 3
Crisis Management
Choose a current article or video about a business crisis involving a specific
company. Using research, assess the company’s crisis management according to
the Four Crisis Stages in the textbook. See page 171 chapter 6 of the textbook
What was the outcome?
Clearly outline the four stages of the crisis, describing how each stage relates to the
business crisis.
Who were the stakeholders and how were they affected?
What would you have done differently or the same?
Assignment should be 300-500 words in current APA formatting. The text and at least
one outside source must be listed as references and cited in the body of the analysis.
ASSIGNMENT 4 Corporate Philanthropy
Find a video of a commercial related to corporate philanthropy, preferable from a
major sporting event. Commercial can be from any major sporting event but must
focus on corporate social responsibility.
Often during the Super Bowl or other major sporting events, a large number of the
commercials are focused on corporate social responsibility. For this discussion, search
the Internet to find a commercial from a major sports event related to corporate
philanthropy. Include the link to the video in your initial post at the top of the post.
Do not post a commercial that some else has already written about.
Do some research to find out why the corporation is supporting that particular initiative.
Is there a history of the company supporting that initiative?
What is the theme or message in the commercial?
Who is the primary audience that it would be targeted at don’t say sports fans!
Include your thoughts on transparency and possible legislation to require disclosure.
Assess the influence of corporate giving on consumers and employees.
Are other stakeholders affected?
Guidelines
Use current APA formatting to list the article or video.
ASSIGNMENT 5

TED Talk. (Links to an external site.) TED Talks are influential videos that stir your
curiosity.

responsibility and ethics in management and build our MGMT 325 community of
“curious souls to engage with ideas and each other,” as TED puts it. The topic chosen
for this assignment must be related to this course’s content and use at least one
specific example related to business. Use the Module Objectives and course
Learning Outcomes as your guidelines.
