An assessment of communication skills is a critical area included in a core assessment battery for the eligibility of ASD. For this assignment, you will complete a language and communication assessment chart as well as write an informative essay discussing communication, language, and social skills for students with ASD.

Using the Unit 5 Assignment Template, your assignment should include the following:

Part 1: Assessment Considerations Chart

For Part 1 of the assignment, you will complete a chart examining specific components of communication that are typically assessed when evaluating the communication skills of a child with autism spectrum disorder. You will define each of these components of communication, and discuss standardized and non-standardized assessment tools that can be utilized when evaluating these specific components.

A communication assessment for a child with ASD often includes looking at:

Joint Attention
Symbol Use
Communicative Intent
Expressive Language
Receptive Language
Pragmatic Language
Social Skills

You will then respond to the following for each communication component listed above:

Define the component and provide an example of why it is important to examine this component of communication.
Provide at least two examples of standardized assessments. Include what needs to be considered when choosing a standardized assessment measure and identify the key professionals that would be involved in the assessment process.
Provide at least two examples of non-standardized assessments of the component. Include what needs to be considered when choosing a non-standardized assessment measure and identify the key professionals that would be involved in the assessment process.

Part 2: Assessment Essay
For Part 2 of the assignment, you will write a 1–2-page informative essay where you address each of the following:

Select one of the seven components from the chart you completed and respond to the following:
Compare and contrast the standardized and non-standardized assessment tools that you identified.
What is the purpose of each assessment tool and how is each beneficial to the assessment of the component you selected?
Discuss how assessment findings can be used to plan interventions for a child with autism spectrum disorder.
Identify three different strategies that can be utilized to promote language and social skills in young children with autism spectrum disorder.
