Abstract
Studying abroad is an achievement for many young individuals worldwide seeking to expand
their knowledge by gaining new skills. The field of educational internationalization has gained
popularity over recent years. Stakeholders such as government agencies, charitable enterprises,
private universities, and other external funding organizations have come into play to support the
sector. With over 4 million students studying abroad worldwide, this study uses qualitative
research on a focused group of international students studying at a foreign university from
different countries. The research obtains cultural-related data and overall student experiences in
their learning outcomes. The results are further examined to determine the impacts of studying
abroad, both positive and negative, and whether education internationalization is necessary. The
primary research question for this study is the reasons for studying abroad its comparative
advantages and disadvantages. The intent is to shed light on educational international as a
cultural phenomenon and the relationship between studying abroad and the student’s overall
success.

The Reasons, Advantages, and Disadvantages of Studying Abroad at a Young Age Under
the Background of Education Internationalization
According to the institute organization for economic cooperation and development, over
the past decade, the number of students studying abroad increased by about 12% yearly
(Costello, 2019). The United States is the favorite destination for most students attracting over
690,000 students during the 2009-2010 school year, followed by the United Kingdom (Schmidt
& Pardo, 2017). An institution such as the Association of International Educators advocates for
education internationalization, a process that focuses on the global flow of ideas, knowledge, and
culture. Education exchange programs focusing on the internationalization of education agree
that these programs increase cultural learning and specific skill-based knowledge (Dewald,
Jimenez, & Self, 2016). Even though educational internationalization is viewed as a global
advantage to both the student and hosting country, specific consideration of its impacts is
necessary (Xu & Mei, 2018). The specific reason, strength, and disadvantage of studying abroad
are critical in quantifying the extent to which it benefits or affects the overall well-being of the
student. This paper sets to achieve this goal by relying on grounded research that reveals the
importance and shortcomings of studying abroad in the context of educational
internationalization.
Justification of the study
This study makes an essential contribution to educational internationalization research
since it focuses on international students’ experiences and how they perceive international
education programs. The research uses interviews to collect data from a vast pool of international
students with specific questions directed towards tabulating the importance of international
education on a personal level. With a foundation of interpretive research, the study will allow for

the presentation of experiences of the student in a method that provides a greater understanding
of the globalization of studying abroad. The research, therefore, demonstrates specific ways in
which educational internationalization has shaped the lives of students. The experiences, either
positive or negative, are quantified for interpretation to increase understanding of the importance
of educational internationalization.
The study will provide a better understanding of cultural learning from the students’
perspective in studying abroad. Even though there are many ongoing and completed research
about educational internationalization, this study will present significant insights into how and
what the students learn about other cultures. The study will rely on qualitative research to
investigate the perception of international students on different cultures, their significance in
their overall learning process, and perceived cultural differences in cross-cultural learning. Other
than testing for specific competencies, this study will also provide more insights on quantitative
data of students cultural experiences, which is, in most cases, vague and does not allow for an
in-depth understanding of the experiences of students.
Data provided from this research, together with the proposed objectives, will be relevant
to legislators and other education stakeholders to deduce the significance of educational
internationalization. Studying abroad has several advantages, including leadership development
through intercultural interaction and personal development through improved skills. Even though
educational internationalization is viewed as an affirmative act of cultural and knowledge
exchange, this study reveals specific impacts, both positive and negative, with conclusive
recommendations on improving the sector. The data will be critical to legislators and other
global education practitioners by providing an in-depth understanding of international students
experiences.

Studying abroad is an important objective for many young individuals seeking to expand
their knowledge by gaining new skills.

the way for achieving performance and competitiveness in international academic
mobility and higher education; a significant role is played by certain aspects in this
process, including the exchange programs of students, and partnerships. This paper is
aimed at focusing on the reasons, advantages, and disadvantages of studying abroad at
a young age under the background of educational internationalization. This particular
research paper is grounded on empirical qualitative research that will be implemented
throughout the research paper. One can consider this research paper as a useful
instance for those preoccupied to increase the higher education quality, along with the
conclusions drawn that have shown the relevance both practically and theoretically.
