For this project you will write about two songs from different categories to round out your listening. You will get to choose one song in each category, for a total of two songs for your written project. All approved songs in both categories are listed at the bottom of this assignment; please scroll down past the questions to make your selections. You must choose from these categories; no other selections will be considered. You can find each of these songs on You Tube and/or the Naxos database through Coe Librarys home page. You can find sufficient background information on each song by Googling them.
Once you have chosen your two songs, one from each category, please answer the questions listed below, citing the course texts whenever possible to defend your answers. Your project should contain equal information on each song, and should look like two separate write-ups, listing one song and answering your questions in numerical order, then naming the other song you chose and answering the same questions about it.
1. Give a brief (2-3 sentences) history of the performing group, composer, and/ or piece of music.
2. Find at least 2 reviews or analyses of the piece through online searches or in history books. Include links to online reviews; give a brief (2-3 sentences maximum) synopsis of any review you find in print.
3. Describe the purpose of the song and how it expresses a political or social statement. You can focus on the lyrics (when present) and historical background here.
4. Describe the ways in which the performers and/or composers fulfill that purpose. Please focus on all of the elements of music we have learned thus far (not lyrics).Use your elements of music–instrumentation, form, dynamics, rhythm, melody, etc..
5. So, based on your descriptions in #3 and #4, is this an effective piece of music? Why or why not?
