SOC 3324 Social Class Family and Education Importance in Life Paper I am needing help in writing a connecting topics paper. It is quite simple, I just do not have the time at this moment. I will attach the instructions and the few articles that go with the paper as well as this tedtalk.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ6H-Mz6hgwHere is another article that I couldn’t attach. This also goes along with the connecting topics paper. https://learn-us-east-1-prod-fleet01-xythos.s3.amazonaws.com/5c0f632563f2b/6859481?response-cache-control=private%2C%20max-age%3D21600&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%2A%3DUTF-8%27%27The%2520faces%2520of%2520eviction.pdf&response-content-type=application%2Fpdf&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Date=20200625T180000Z&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Expires=21600&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAZH6WM4PLTYPZRQMY%2F20200625%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Signature=2366b96b4db5afa07d11de50899d77b93a4c92ee3e37ddf1ad7d50560ef258d5 “CONNECTING TOPICS” PAPER
Social Inequality (SOCI 3324)
Summer I
Due June 28
BASIC OUTLINE
Section I: Introduction (1 short paragraph)
Section II: Source summaries (1 paragraph each, total 4)
Section III: Discussion of connections between sources (2-3 paragraphs)
Section IV: Conclusion (1 short paragraph)
Note: A regular paragraph is approx. 5 sentences. A short paragraph is 3-4 sentences
STEPS
1. Choose one of these two themes
?
?
The intersection of class, family, and education
The intersection of class, race, and social mobility
2. Go to folder “Topic paper info and resources” and locate the sources for your topic (3
readings and 1 video talk)
3. For each source, do a close read/listen. This means:
a. Highlight or timestamp important passages
b. Take notes on the key points, along with questions or thoughts on how the source
relates to the others
c. Pick out quotes that summarize or clarify the key points
4. Use your notes to write a summary paragraph for each source
a. Remember, a summary doesn’t mean EASY. Summaries require careful planning and
revision to get the message across in a small amount of space.
? If you are unsure how to write a good summary, please follow the link in
resources folder to a short how-to video
b. Cite author/speaker at least twice per summary
? This should be used for specifics—e.g., “…this is what the authors refer to as the
‘mobility pathway’ at Midwest U” (Armstrong and Hamilton, 2013).
c. Use 1-2 direct quotes from the source in each summary
? Each quote must be under 30 words in length; make sure they don’t substitute
for your voice (they should be supporting roles in the paper, not starring roles)
You’re more than halfway done!
5. Consult your reading notes and think about/brainstorm how each inequality
researcher relates the others.
a. Ask yourself things like
? “What is the thread connecting all the sources?”
? “Do the researchers approach the study of social inequality in the same way, or
come at it from different angles?”
? “Does each state the same thing, or do they make conflicting points?” etc.
Another way to approach this is to imagine how the conversation would go if the
four authors/speakers discussed their research over coffee.
b. If you’re stuck, try reviewing the material covered in the lecture for the units associated
with the topics in your theme.
6. Write 2-3 paragraphs discussing the relationship among the readings.
a. You can start by stating the obvious (“The articles are related in that each deals with
how social class inequality is present in families and schools”)
b. However, you must go beyond that to point out ways the sources are connected that
your reader may not realize (you’re the expert). Be specific and walk your reader
through your thoughts.
7. Write a short conclusion paragraph [3-4 sentences] in which you state what someone
would learn about your topic if these were the only readings available.
a. Add your individual thoughts on what the readings show about social inequality.
? To come up with some, ask yourself things like
– “Do these readings cover everything about the connection between
social inequality and family life, or is something missing?”
– “What kind of study on this topic would be an interesting addition?”
Etc.
b. This is the section where you should make clear some of what you’ve learned in this
course. The analysis should be more in-depth than if you were discussing these topics
without having taken this course.
8. Write a short introduction paragraph [3-4 sentences] in which you tell your reader in
your own words what your paper is about
IMPORTANT
?
APA style required for in-text citations for author/speaker, year, and page number where
applicable (if you’re not sure about any of these, check the list of references at the end of the
syllabus)
o For general attribution: (Pattillo, 2018)
o For direct quotes: “…racially-integrated middle class neighborhoods” (Pattillo, 2018, p.
336).
o Citing interviews, broadcasts, and lectures is a bit different than articles, so you will
need to…
Check the APA style guide linked in the Resources folder!
?
You do not need to include a reference list unless you use sources beyond those in the folder.
WORD COUNT GUIDELINE (approximate)
If you like to structure your paper with word count in mind, use the following as an approximate
