Vector-borne and zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases whose transmission involves animal hosts or vectors. Vector-borne diseases, such as malaria, are those in which an organism, typically insects, ticks, or mites, carries a bug from one host to another, generally with the increased deadliness of the bug in the vector. Zoonoses, such as Avian Flu, are diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans by either contact with the animals or through vectors that carry zoonotic pathogens from animals to humans (NIH. gov, 2017).
In Arizona, the current 2020 statistics given by the Arizona department of health that 39 cases if zoonotic or vector-borne diseases, the majority cases were related to mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue fever, zika, and yellow fever. The other vector-borne disease is rocky mountain spotted fever, which is carried by ticks. The ADHS states that Although none of these viruses are known to be in Arizona, they could be introduced if someone traveled to an area where the virus was spreading, became infected, and was then bitten by a local Arizona mosquito after returning. The other zoonotic potential is rabies but has not been reported. (azdhs.gov, 2018).
The concept of One Health demonstrates that the health of people is connected to the health of animals and the environment. The aim of One Health is to establish the collaborative efforts of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally, and globally to achieve ideal health for people, animals, and our environment. Due to the potential of a zoonotic vector-borne outbreak from the diversity in wildlife species, disparities across communities, extreme climates, and varying topography found across Arizona. Arizona has collaborations with multiple organizations which include the Arizona Department of Agriculture, Arizona Game & Fish Department, Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, National Park Service, Arizona Department of Health and the CDC (azdhs.gov, 2018)
