New York University Week 2 One Health. Zoonotic Disease Prioritization HW IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:
Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.
Some infectious diseases are transmitted to humans from a nonhuman-organisms, such as zoonotic or vector-borne. A zoonotic disease is an infectious disease caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungi that is transmitted to humans from animals, both domestic and wild, such as rabies or anthrax. The disease can be transmitted by direct contacts such as coming in contact with the infected animals’ body fluid such as blood or saliva. Also, the disease can be transmitted indirectly, such as coming in contact with objects or surfaces where the infected animal lives and touched (Maxwell, 2014; Center for disease control and prevention [CDC], 2017).
Vectors are living organisms that transmit infectious diseases between humans and nonhuman organisms. The vector-borne disease is an infectious disease caused by bacteria, parasites, or viruses that are transmitted to humans from a vector. Examples of vector-borne diseases are mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue fever, malaria, zika, and chikungunya. There are also different vectors that transmit diseases, such as Lyme diseases from ticks and typhus from lice (Maxwell, 2014, World Health Organization, 2020).
An emerging disease in my region which is Galveston County is the rise in murine typhus, which is transmitted by rats and rat fleas. This flea-borne disease is caused by a bite from an infected flea and the symptoms include fever, chills, body aches and muscle pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, cough, and rash. However, if the disease is not treated correctly, it can lead to severe organ damages. This disease is rare in the U.S, but prevalent in Texas, California, and Hawaii, but in 1944, there was an increased peak of incidence with 5,401 cases, but the diseases were almost eradicated due to implementations created in 1945. Although the case is rare, Galveston county had a total of 40 cases in 2018 (Ruiz et al., 2020).
One health is an approach that focuses on the health and connection between animals and the environment. One health addresses issues through a transdisciplinary collaborative approach which includes various fields, such as zoonotic diseases, environmental contamination, vector-borne diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety and food security, and other factors that causes a threat to the health and safety of the environment, people, and animals. The one health approach could work in reducing the rise of murine typhus in Galveston County by getting experts to cooperate, evaluate, monitor, and control the transmission of the diseases. Along with establishing a proper communication channel between the collaborative field experts and implement laws and policies that prevent the spread of the diseases. For instance, since the disease is from rat fleas, a law to sanitize and eradicate rats would reduce the transmitting of the disease (CDC, 2018; Ruiz et al., 2020).
