Arizona State University Environmental Geology of Cities Lab Report i need help in thisFollow the guidelines in the attached file to carry out this portion….. : part 1 Environmental geology of Cities
During this semester we learned how geologic processes and resources can influence the life of people
and civilization. We are part of the Earth System, how does this reality translate in the urban
environment? AFTER lecture on Monday, as we conclude with a overarching view of the course and a
sample analysis of a city, you can start to work at your exam 2.
For this you will choose a city/town, can be anywhere the world of the present, or a city of the past. You
will carry out an urban geology environmental analysis and then make some of your own considerations.
You can choose one city from this global city data:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/ia/gprb/html/global/global.shtml
If the city is in the US https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/PST045219
This section will count as 50% of your exam 2: it is due at the end of the day on June 25. No later
submission will be accepted. It will take you about 3-4hours of work to complete this
Description and format of assignment
Your exam report will answer the following questions, formatted as described below. Submission in pdf or
word docx. Your answers can be organized in a bullet/numbered list. The number of pages is considered a
maximum.
Page 1 contains the following (15% of project)
1. The name of your city of choice, reason for your choice
2. where it is found (nation, continent) area (define if city proper or other) and population
3. if possible economy (industrial/agricultural/tourism, etc.
4. One or two sentences describing the geographic environment. For example, is your city near a
coastline? Emergent or submergent (e.g. the coastal plains are submergent). On a hilly area? On a
desert? On a plateau at high elevation (for example, Denver).
Page 2 and 3 (60% of project)
1. The general geology of the city. Where does it sit with respect to plate boundaries?*
2. What natural hazards resulting from plate boundaries can affect the city of your choice? Any
volcano, seismic region nearby, flooding? mass wasting? Is there any other major natural
hazard? Related to the coastline perhaps, or extreme weather?
a. For earthquakes recently affecting your city remember to look up:
i. For the US ? https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/
ii. For the rest of the world: https://ds.iris.edu/seismon/bigmap/index.phtml.
Click on the area of interest for details.
b. For earthquakes by state (if your city is in the US you can go to;
https://www.usgs.gov/natural-hazards/earthquake-hazards/information-region
3. What are the major natural resources of the city and /or its surrounding?
4. Water resource: Is the City crossed by a river? Is flooding a hazard in your city of choice? When
did the last significant flood happened? What type of flood was it? Is there any dam? Where
does the city get its water from?
Page 4 (20% of project):
Your own viewpoint on sustainability and resilience with respect to natural hazards and
anthropogenic hazards related to geological processes. Your considerations must be limited to
aspects related to environmental geology.
Page 5: (5% of project)
Find an image of your city of choice that best embodies your understanding of the urban geologic
environment and write a caption for it.
Page 6: work cited (5% extra credit)
These are guidelines, if you follow them your work wont be more than 6 pages, you can go a little over,
please do not submit more than 9. You have the choice of font type and size, a good range is between 1012 pt for the font size. Single or double space is up to you.
You do not have to achieve a number of pages/words/characters
Your work
