What is Excel?
A computer program used to create spreadsheets electronically.
Uses the same shortcuts and functions like other Microsoft programs.
Used to easily organize data, create charts and graphs, edit information, and
perform calculations.

Overview of Excel
By default, Excel will open a blank workbook
that contains worksheets/spreadsheets.
It is possible to have more than one spreadsheet in a
workbook.
Each box in a column and a row is called a
cell.
Ie. Column A, Row 1 (shown by arrow) is referred to
as cell A1.
In chemistry, Excel is used to create graphs, in
order to see the trends in the data.
Text Recognition
Excel is capable of recognizing text
consisting of numbers, letters, and
characters.
Text alignment will reveal how Excel
perceives the data being input on
each cell.
Left alignment is recognized as words.
Right alignment means that Excel sees
the data as a set of numbers and can,
therefore, be used to perform
mathematical functions.
Creating a graph
A step-by-step procedure
Properly label row 1.
To resize the column width, select the column(s) and align the mouse at the end of the
column. If aligned properly, the mouse will change into
. Double click.
To select multiple columns, press the CTRL button on the keyboard and left-click the mouse
button to choose the proper columns.
Fill the column with the data.
If the data is a series of numbers:
Type the first number on cell A2.
Type the equal sign on cell A3.
Click on or type in the first cells
number (A2) in the series.
Type in +1 and press enter.
Autofill
Select cell A3.
Place the cursor at the bottom right
corner of cell A3.
When the cursor turns into
,
left click on the mouse and drag
down to autofill the rest of the
column.
When performing a math function,
such as setting up an equation that
automatically calculates the natural
log of energy drinks consumed:
Type in the equal sign.
Type the math function (ie. ln for
natural log).
Type in an open parenthesis (.
Select the proper cell from the data
(in this case, type or select cell
B2).
Close the parenthesis ).
Press ENTER.
Drag the cursor to the
bottom right corner of cell
C2 and when the cursor
turns into , double click to
autofill the rest of the
column.
Select column A
and C by clicking
on the top of the
columns. Press
and hold the
CTRL button in
order to select
more than 1
column at a time.
While columns A and C are highlighted:
Click the INSERT tab.
Find the Chart and select Scatter with Smooth Lines and Markers.
Click on Chart Elements (plus sign on the right of the graph) and select
Axis Titles. Label your x-axis, y-axis, as well as the title of your graph.
Right click on any of your data points on the graph and select Add
Trendline. (You should see a dotted line appear on your graph.)
Choose the Linear trendline.
Right click on the trendline on the graph again and choose outline, to change
the color of the trendline.
Scroll down to the bottom of trendline options and check the boxes for
Display Equation on chart and Display R-squared value on chart.

Microsoft Excel: Create a Basic Spreadsheet
To complete this assignment, you will need the Microsoft Excel program installed on
your tablet or computer. Alternatively, you may utilize any of the computer labs on

1. A general chemistry student tracks her hours of sleep during the course of a
particularly rough semester and finds the following data:

Determine if the correlation is strong based upon the calculated R2 value.
o Any value above 0.90 is considered a strong correlation. The slope of

1b) Based upon this value, how would you describe the relationship between the length
