OVERVIEW
Your assignment will be to write a short essay (approximately one page long)
detailing the parts of the scientific method discussed in the assigned article
posted to Canvas. Please see the rubric, also posted to Canvas, for details
about the grade breakdown for this assignment.
CONTENT
Using the rubric, you will be graded on the following content:
Begin by clearly identifying the subject of the scientific study. You will also
explain the problem or observation that spurred the research. While reading
your article, it may be helpful to ask yourself why the scientists did the study. Do
additional research, if necessary, to fully provide your reader with background to
justify this experiment.
Then identify the hypothesis the scientists were testing. Remember that a
hypothesis is a testable educated guess. Thus, it is not appropriate to pose a
question here. These guesses also take a clear position. While reading your
article, it can be helpful to ask yourself what reasoning the scientists tried to use
to explain their initial observation. Include any thoughts as to how the scientists
came to their hypothesis.
Next you will describe the experiment that was performed to address the
hypothesis. You may be detailed in this section. Be sure to explain both how the
experiment was conducted and what was measured. State the independent and
dependent variables of the experiment; describe any control groups; or identify
the conditions that were help constant in the experiment. Also, pull from other
sources if you do not fully understand how the experiment was conducted. For
example, if a piece of equipment was used, you may want to do a little
background research to understand why it was used and what type of data it
can generate.
Then identify the experimental results that the scientists obtained. What did the
scientists find after doing their experiment? What specific data were gathered?
Again, you may be detailed here. It may be helpful find the original research
study and examine tables and/or graphs from it to aid in your discussion.
Here, you will identify the conclusion of the study (hint: I’m referring to the
conclusion of the study, you’re not done with your journal yet!). In this part,
discuss how did the scientists interpreted their results. Note that this section is
different than the results section. Above, you discussed what they found in their
experiment, here, you will discuss what the results mean. Try considering how
the researchers explained their findings.
Finally, you will pose further research questions that arose from this study.
After doing this study, what is the logical next step? What research could be
done next? Did this research neglect an important question? Be sure to pose a
research question here, not a practical question. Finally, you may end by
proposing a further experiment that could be performed to follow up on the
questions that arose.
STYLE & FORMATTING
Scientific-style writing does not typically include direct quotations. Paraphrasing
(i.e., using your own words) shows that you understand the content of the
assigned article. It also delivers the interpretation that you want to convey. As
such, direct quotations are not allowed in this assignment.
Since you are pulling information from a source, you must cite the assigned
article. Use APA style for in-text parenthetical citations and to make a separate
reference page. While there is no required length for your journal, I expect them
to be about one-page long. Follow standard APA style for other formatting:
double-space your writing, use one-inch margins, and readable font type (APA
recommends 12 pt Times New Roman font). Include a cover page and running
head. Your journal should also be written with stylistically correct grammar and
punctuation, so be sure to proofread your writing. Submit your journal as a word
document or pdf (no Pages files).
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Consult the grading rubric (posted to Canvas) while completing this assignment
to ensure you have all the required content points.
Submit your final journal via Canvas by the deadline listed in your syllabus.
Do not plagiarize.
