Technical Community College History of Child Abuse & Emotional Regulation Paper You already chose your article and posted it on the discussion board. Now you will need to find 2 or 3 articles that the American Psychological Association have printed about the topic you read. You will summarize the article and add the abstracts with one to support the theory and one to dispute the theory that your news article informs about. This is my topic for my research paper:Emotion Regulation Mediates the Relationship between a History of Child Abuse and Current PTSD/Depression Severity in Adolescent Females.I attached my research paper as reference as well. JOURNAL ARTICLE CRITIQUE
Journal Article Critique of
“Emotion Regulation Mediates the Relationship between a History of Child Abuse and Current
PTSD/Depression Severity in Adolescent Females.”
Comprehension
Purpose
The article focuses on the relationship between exposures to abuse during childhood with mental
illnesses especially Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as the ability to regulate emotions. To
establish any underlying connection between these elements, the article goes ahead analyzing a
sample population from which data is collected regarding exposure to child abuse and its impact
later in life in relation to emotional balance as well as experiencing depression (John et al. 2017).
This study seeks to develop the already existing literature on the topic. The study however aims
to reinforce the already known relationship between the variables but in a different population
sample. The existing study on these variables is significantly based on adult populations while
this current study focusses on adolescent girls. The journal therefore aims to conclude whether
exposure to child abuse leads to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the latter years as well as
instability of emotions.
Results/Conclusion
From the study which was conducted among adolescent girls, several conclusions can be
drawn from the observations which were made based on the analysis which was executed.
Exposure to child abuse among most of the adolescents used in the study led to higher chances of

emotional regulation issues. The high levels of problems such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
as well as emotional regulations depended on the severity of Child abuse (John et al. 2017).
Exposure to severe abuse was found to lead to higher chances of occurrence of Post-Traumatic
Stress disorder and emotional imbalance among the adolescents. The study confirmed the
hypothesized notion that “Emotion regulation significantly mediated the relation of how severe
the child abuse is an expression of Post Traumatic Disorder symptoms and depression.” The
results for this study reinforce the existing research on Child abuse as a risk factor for mental
health issues which is established through analyzing a population that has gone through a
traumatic event such as abuse and the availability of Post-traumatic symptoms later in life.
Analysis and Evaluation
Strengths
Even though the topic of study has been greatly explored in the past, this current study explores
new areas which contribute to more literature on the topic. One of the major strengths of the
study is the fact that it explores a population rarely examined on the topic. The study examines
adolescent females between the ages of 11-17, unlike previous studies which are majorly based
on adults. The study, therefore, reinforces the results and conclusions made earlier on the topic of
study ascertaining the fact that the existing literature is credible by proving this using a new class
of the population. The study also explores the mediating factor between exposure to abuse at an
early age as well as emotion regulation hence producing unique results since highly-impaired
adolescent samples are used, something which has never happened in the past. The study
therefore provides an evidence-based conclusion on the bases of representative sample examined

which can be applied to make a lifelong intervention as a preventive measure of mental illnesses
among individuals as well as emotional regulation issues. Intervention strategies can therefore be
developed based on the results of this study bearing in mind that most cases of mental health
issues are related to a history of traumatic events such as exposure to abuse as National
Traumatic Stress Network suggests (John et al. 2017). Exposure to abuse is therefore a problem
of great concern which needs more research which this study develops. Generally, the study
therefore makes a significant contribution to research on the relationship between exposure to
abuse and the occurrence of mental health issues.
Weaknesses
There are a number of factors which limit this study. One of the key aims in conducting the study
was to establish to what extent exposure to abuse impacts the occurrence of post-traumatic
disorder and emotion regulation issues. Despite finding the results and conclusion that there is a
relationship between the variables of research the study does not establish to which levels the
independent variable affects the dependent variable. The study, for instance, concludes that
exposure to abuse affects the occurrence of Post-traumatic stress disorder as well as emotional
regulation issues. However, the study does not go into detail on how the different kinds of abuse
have different levels of impact as far as mental health issues and emotional relationships are
concerned. For example, there are different kinds of abuse which can be exposed to personalities
and it would not be correct to assume that they all lead to the same prevalence levels of
associated mental health issues. The study also ignores the fact that other factors may affect the
relationship between the two variables being studied. Despite the fact that abuse has an impact
on the occurrence of mental health issues, other factors such as the environment at which the
person grows it may increase the severity of the mental health issue a concern which this study

significantly ignores. Despite these limitations, the study is still significant since it offers more
research on the topic of literature. However, there is still need for more research on narrow
aspects of the topic.
Synthesis and Evaluation
There are a number of ways in which the article can be made more convincing. One of
such areas which could be improved to make the article more convincing is the classification of
the impact of different kinds of abuse and the levels of influence as far as the occurrence of
mental health issues is concerned. As noted in the weaknesses of the study, different types of
child abuse may have different levels of impact in relation to causing mental health issues as well
as an emotional imbalance. For instance, abuse through sexual assault may have more severe
consequences in causing emotional regulation issues and Post-Traumatic Disorder among other
mental illnesses as compared to another less serious of abuse such as overworking the underage.
Provision of such a classification can be vital in increasing the convincing natures of the article
as the study becomes narrow hence more credible.
The study can also be more convincing by adopting a more significant population from
diverse environments and exposure. When the population being examined comes from areas with
different environmental factors which are likely to be interested in establishing the relationship
between abuse and mental health issues it puts the stud in level ground hence avoiding biasness.
Since there are other factors which may affect the relationship between abuse and mental health
issues using a population from different geographical representations as well as social norms
solves this problem hence making the study more convincing.

Finally, it is important to acknowledge that there are other factors which lead to mental
health problems as well as emotional regulation defects. The focus of the target population
should therefore consider whether the characters have been exposed to these factors in addition
to studying abuse. Ignoring other factors which may lead to mental health issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder may give exposure to abuse a lot of weight which it does not deserve.
Exploring the part played by these other factors will also make the study more convincing.
