Story#1
Saving money as a college student is important. The more you save, the better off you’ll
be.
Kelly Uwanjye from Rwanda, a second-year student at Wartburg College. She is the
secretary for Iclub and she involved in service trips. She is studying actuarial sciences and
accounting.
Uwanjye working on a part-time job at the Pathways center as a pathways peer and also,
she works at Zesty Orange.
“I chose to get a part-time job because I need to save money so I can do several things
like traveling, buy a new phone, hangout with friends, shopping and save money for the
emergency purposes,” Uwanjye said.
Saving is important for students because it helps them graduate from college without a
huge financial burden. College is the time where the students shows their financial maturity to
the extent that they can track their finances.
“Most college students have daily needs but also have future plans and often plans like
emergency needs, tuition, travelling, bills and cars workshop,” Uwanjye said.
There are many ways for college students to save money, but it’s depends of the student
daily spending.
“Some of the students have saving bank account, some do short-term investments to save
money and don’t overdraft the bank account because banks take fees for overdraft,” Uwanjye
said.
Money management is a tricky for many students. Some students don’t know the
differences between want and need, so they buy things are not important or they don’t need it.
There are many different ways to get to start managing money.
“To manage my money spending I create a budget for each month, I don’t buy things I
don’t need, I buy or rent used book for my classes, I avoid unnecessary spending, Eating in the
Mensa and keeping money in saving account rather than checking,” Uwanjye said.
The money spending ways is different from one to another, it depends on each student’s
need and how much money they have saved.
“Most college students spend their money on food, clothing, books, transportat fees like
gasoline expenses, flight tickets and personal care items, like lotions and shampoo,” Uwanjye
said.
Uwanjye have her special plans to spend her saving on.
“I usually spend my saving on buying books to read, traveling, shopping, pay my medical
bills and buy electronics like a new phone or laptop,” Uwanjye said.
During college years, students starts feeling the responsibility of their financial, so they
start saving and don’t waste their money. For each student there is a big reason to make them
save money.
“The reason that made me start saving is because my parents can’t send money to me
when I need, I start saving so I don’t need to take a loan if something happens to me, also to have
money to travel on the vacations, enjoying my life, buy a new laptop and phone,” Uwanjye said.
Saving is really important for all students. There is no better time than the present, start saving
now. Saving money is worth the effort. It gives you peace of mind, it gives you options, and the
more you save, the easier it becomes to accumulate additional savings.
