Project Overview: Midterm
In this unit, we pause to take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re going. At the
midterm, English 102 slows down for a moment to help you and your instructor think
about how far you’ve already come and work you have left to do.
We accomplish this goal through the midterm portfolio—a collection of your work and
your own thinking about your work in order to determine how well you’ve met the goals
of the assignments and the course so far and what you need to focus on for the remainder
of the semester.
The Midterm Portfolio also allows you the opportunity to practice compiling and shaping
a portfolio of your writing. Recall that when the course ends, the final portfolio that you
submit to your instructor will be worth 70% of your grade. That makes the portfolio a
high-stakes project, and we don’t want it to be the first time you’ve ever tried to compile
a portfolio. It’s best to work out the kinks now, while there is still time to correct them.
A successful portfolio will evaluate, argue, and reflect.
Purpose
The midterm provides an excellent opportunity to evaluate your progress thus far in the
course. In order to show your development over time, you will
•
use revised drafts of your work to make an argument about your growth as a
writer
You will also demonstrate your learning through reflection.
Reflective Element
In a portfolio-based course like this one, reflection plays a major role in identifying and
describing things students learn. You’ll be focusing specifically on whether or not you’ve
met the English 102 course learning goals (see page xii of JAC) and providing evidence
for you claim.
What claim can you make about your learning at this point in the course? What
evidence do you have to support those claims? The reflective element should
demonstrate your keen insights and thoughtfulness about your learning in this course.
Just by thinking about and describing your writing process—the steps you take when you
have a writing project to complete—you might realize things about how you work and
what works best for you.
In the reflective component, the writer should clearly connect the learning goals that
he/she has met to their writing by integrating key terms and concepts from the
course content and materials (e.g., PACT, rhetoric, writing process, conventions).
Writing to Reflect
Audience
For this project, your primary audience is your instructor. Just like the final-for-now
drafts of the projects you’ve completed, your instructor will read you work to determine
how you’re doing. Unlike these projects, you will not receive extensive comments on
your work. Instead, you will receive an in-progress grade for your portfolio. See pages
xv-xvii of JAC for a portfolio rubric.
In English 102, your midterm grade reflects what your grade would be if the course
ended today. There is still time to revise and improve your work throughout the rest of
the term.
Conventions
Your Midterm Portfolio should be approximately ten (10) pages long and include:
•
•
•
•
•
Cover Page
A Table of Contents
A three page reflective element
Your revised Annotated Bibliography*
Your revised Evaluation*
*Your changes through drafting (with your writing as evidence), should be detailed
throughout the portfolio.
Visit page 55 of Joining Academic Conversations for a worksheet on designing your
portfolio.
Successful portfolios will also result in consensus–convince me with your work.

QUESTION 1 OF 8
Your response will become available to the student who gave you feedback.
What topic is your peer review partner researching? In one sentence, paraphrase the topic the author
has chosen.
REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
The topic that my partner is researching is sports related injuries and how to minimize them, with a
primary focus on soccer. More specifically, my partner is conducting to a lot of research on the main
factors that cause injuries such as concussions and how such injuries can be prevented through the
use of specific terrains and equipment while playing.
Useful feedback should:
Be constructive and tell you how to improve
• Be specific and point to concrete things in your work
• Be justified and provide explanations
• Not use harsh language

Q1
How useful is the feedback?
QUESTION 2 OF 8
Not useful at all.
Does your peer review partner cite his/her sources correctly? If you’re not sure, see your Easy Writer
textbook or Purdue OWL’S MLA Style Guide. What problems does this student have in using correct
MLA documentation style in formatting these sources? Check for hanging indents, sources in
alphabetical order, etc.
Not very useful.
Somewhat useful. Could be more elaborate.
REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
O Very useful. Minor things could be better.
The citations are all performed correctly with the right format, being the author, title, container,
version, number, and date. They are also in good shape with the in text format of the citations as the
hanging indent is done very well. The only qualm with the citations is the order in which they come in.
For instance, Slimani comes after Stubbe in this paper specifically. This is incorrect as with MLA
format, there is supposed to be citations in alphabetical order, however this is a minor issue and a
very easy fix.
O Extremely useful.

QUESTION 3 OF 8
Your response will become available to the student who gave you feedback.
Is it clear from this full list of annotations where the writer is going with his/her selected
topic? Beyond just saying yes or no, can you make a guess on where you see the research headed? If
not, what questions do you have regarding the position this student will take in his/her paper?
REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
Yes, it is clear where this paper is headed. There is a lot of research that focuses on the causes and
factors and contribute to soccer injury and I believe this paper serves to emphasize on how injury can
be minimized. With the sources provided and the annotations on how the sources will be used, it is a
fair assumption to make that the author of this annotated bibliography has a great knowledge of the
risk of injury and the sport itself so they are more than incline to write in the direction of minimizing
injury risk.

Q1
How useful is the feedback?
Not useful at all.
QUESTION 4 OF 8
Not very useful.
Does the annotated bibliography include a healthy variety of sources that add breadth to the topic? If
not, suggest how the author might balance their research. What types of research gaps do you see?
Where would you suggest this student go next in their research? What types of questions should
they be asking? How might they revise their topic or questions in order to fill these gaps?
Somewhat useful. Could be more elaborate.
REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
O Very useful. Minor things could be better.
O Extremely useful.
The source provides a very good variety of sources relating to their topic. One citation that I thought
was especially groundbreaking was how psychology can come into play when speaking of injury risk.
Most people would think of injuries as purely anatomical. I do not see any gaps in the research, as the
author takes very good care to monitor all factors when speaking of injury, from environmental
factors, to physiological factors, to psychological factors. The author should be asking more
questions into the role psychology plays into minimizing injury, as I feel as though it would create a
more unique paper, as most injury minimization research focuses mainly on physical attributes. I do
not feel as though the author needs to revise their topic or questions.

QUESTION 5 OF 8
Your response will become available to the student who gave you feedback.
Does your peer review partner adequately explain how the source will be useful to his/her research?
How reliable or helpful do their sources seem? What sources are questionable? What sources may
require more critical evaluation?
REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
My partner does adequately explain how each source will be useful. All of their sources seem to be of
scholarly nature, with most coming from outlets that focus on the physical therapy related to sports
injuries or academic journals about athletic training. I do not believe that any sources are
questionable and need more evaluation.

QUESTION 6 OF 8
How useful is the feedback?
Does your peer review partner provide an adequate summary of his/her sources? Are the author’s
main insights/conclusion identified for each source?
Not useful at all.
REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
Not very useful.
Yes, the author provides adequate summary. Each annotation starts with a sentence or two about
what the source is about and then immediately explains the main insight or aim of his source.
Somewhat useful. Could be more elaborate.

Additional comments?
There are no specific quotes and only paraphrases in the author’s work. While this is not necessarily
a problem, specific quotes would prove beneficial to the research.

What final comments do you have about the piece? What is good about it? What most needs work?

REVIEWER #1’S FEEDBACK TO YOUR SUBMISSION
I really do enjoy what I think this paper will become and I believe as though it has a very good
direction. It is too early to tell if the paper needs more work, but I have very high hopes for it as it has
very well documented sources that discuss a profusion of different factors. I feel as though all of
these factors combined will make this paper an amazing one.
