Tips on Avoiding First Person when Writing about Personal Opinion
First, Second, & Third Person Guide
First Person
Second Person
Third Person
Subjective Pronouns (Singular /
Plural)
I, we
You, You
he, she it, they, one
Objective Pronouns (singular,
plural)
me, us
you, you
him, her, them
The third person point of view is considered the most professional approach to writing. In
addition to enhancing credibility, another reason to write primarily in the third person is because
frequent changes in point of view can create confusion for the reader.
To do this the writer needs to stick to the facts and any opinions he/she may have must be
worded in such a way as to not sound like an opinion at all. That may be where people have a
difficulty. This is understandable. How in the world can an opinion be given without it sounding
as such? It takes practice and diligence. For example, if the paper being written is about tadpoles
turning to frogs the writer shouldn’t start off saying, “When I was a kid I was fascinated to see
tadpoles turning into frogs every summer.” That brings the article right back to the first person
point of view and a personal account. Instead the article should say, “Kids all over spend
summers watching in fascination tadpoles turning into frogs.” The writer has to pretend to be
writing about the subject as if he/she isn’t part of the story,
Examples of how to convert first person sentences to third person when discussing personal
opinion:
Example 1
“In this essay I will examine how gender and ethnicity factors affect buying
behaviors.”
“Careful examination of gender and ethnicity factors shows how these affect buying
behavior.”
“Gender and ethnicity factors affect buying behaviors by…”
Example 2
“I think that assisting developing countries to grow crops such as tobacco and opium
poppies is not in their best long-term interests”
“Assisting developing countries to grow crops such as tobacco and opium poppies is
not in their best long-term interests.”
Example 3
“In my opinion, paying benefits to high-school students encourages them to stay at
school when they would be better off in paid employment.”
“Paying benefits to high school students encourages them to stay at school when they
would be better off in paid employment.”
Example 4
“As a teacher, I believe teachers need training in observing pupil behavior to pick up
on unexpressed needs.”
“Educationalists need training in observing pupil behavior to pick up on unexpressed
needs.”
Example 5
”I read a research report that showed the importance of advertising for a business.”
”You can find many articles that support the theory that advertising makes a
significant impact on your business. “
”Research shows that advertising makes a significant impact on sales for businesses
in every sector of the private sector. “
