In the article, See baby discriminate, Bronson and Merryman discuss race among children
ingroup preferences, racial attitudes, self-concept, etc. The Skin Deep article by Kolbert
discusses the scientific and genetic basis of race.
In the AC360 videos, researchers complete a study similar to the Kenneth Clark doll studies
completed in the 1940s and 1950s. The Clark doll studies greatly influenced the Brown v.
Board of Education of Topeka decision which served to desegregate public schools in
America.
Hutchinson et al. (2011) indicates the following about most children: (a) by age 3, racial
awareness evolves; (b) by age 3 or 4, racial/ethnic self-identification begins to evolve; and (c)
between the ages 5 to 8, ethnic group identification and/or ingroup preferences evolve. Based on
Piagets stages of cognitive development, this awareness, self-identification, and group
identification occurs during the pre-operational and concrete operations stages.
Complete
1. In an original response of 2-to-3 paragraphs, indicate whether or not you believe that race is
an unavoidable aspect of childrens awareness, identity, and attitudes. Identify a passage or
suggestion from the readings that support your point of view (a source outside the required
readings can be used). Do you believe that childrens racial identity and attitudes are
modifiable? If so, through what process or mechanism? If not, why not?
Last, respond to one of the following questions:
(a) Based on your viewing of the AC360 videos, do you believe that such studies
unnecessarily prime children to the issue of race? Explain your answer!
OR
(b) Based on your viewing of the AC360 videos, what is your assessment of the
measurement tools used by the researchers; that is, based on the methodology used to
study race in the videos, do you believe the findings and interpretations are valid or
problematic? Explain your answer!
(Note: use proper APA citation mechanics if directly quoting from the readings; do not use more than
one direct quote from readings or other sources; any direct quote should be short).
2. Post a response to a group members original response to the required items/questions. Please
note that you will be randomly assigned to groups of 3 to 4 students.
Module 6 Discussion Questions |2
It is expected that you will do the following: (1) select one group members post to respond
to, (2) reiterate the stance or perspective of your group mate in your own words, (3) indicate
whether or not you agree with your group mates stance or perspective, and (4) explain why
you agree or disagree with their stance or perspective.
Note: It is expected that your response to group member illustrates depth of thought and be
communicated clearly. Your response to a group member(s) response should be a minimum
of five sentences (10 sentences max).
WRITING EXPECTATIONS:
Succinctness in writing is desired for this assignment. Getting your point across in a concise
manner allows it to be more easily understood. Note: Original discussion posts that exceed a
maximum of 21 sentences will incur deductions. Response to a group members post longer than
10 sentences will incur deductions.
It is important to distinguish different paragraphs in posts by a space between them or
indentation.
