For a general overview of the assignment, please see ?Joining Academic Conversations? (p.5-6).
A ?bibliography? is a list of sources you have used when researching a topic. Bibliographies are
sometimes called “References” or ?”Works Cited”? depending on the style format you are using. A
bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher,
etc.).
An ?annotation? is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a
summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment,
your annotations may do one or more of the following:
? Summarize
? Assess
? Reflect
Summarize?: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments?
What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this
article/book is about, what would you say? The assigned length of your annotations will
determine how detailed your summary is.
Assess?: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How
does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this
source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
Reflect?: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your
research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can
you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
Assignment Guidelines:
For this project I am asking you to create an Annotated Bibliography for your initial stages of
inquiry and research into your chosen topic. Using the resources available to you, including the
lessons from class, you will select an appropriate number of sources, create MLA formatted
citations, and write 200 (+/- 25) word annotations for those sources.
Your annotations must include ?accurate, and effective, summaries? of the sources you select.
While it is not an assignment requirement, you must? ?also include ?brief evaluations? of those
sources in your annotation, if you are at a stage in your research where that makes sense.
However, if you are still exploring your topic, and have not yet settled on a research question to
help you narrow your search, and use as a baseline for your source evaluations, its okay to focus
entirely on summary in your annotations.
Evaluation Criteria:
When evaluating your annotated bibliographies, I will pay special attention to the following
areas:
? Accuracy and Completeness of Citations
? Effective Summary and Evaluation of Sources
? Attention to Purpose and Audience
? Appropriate Length and Style
? 6-8 scholarly sources
? Adherence to Genre Conventions
I will also use the rubric in JAC (p. xvi-xvii) to help me evaluate your work, and to provide you
with feedback for your revisions.
