Role of gender in Leadership
Introduction
Leadership plays a vital role in the smooth running and profitability of firms. Today, most
organization have realized the significant of engaging a diverse workforce that comprises of both
men and women. Gender in leadership is a key component that results in the stereotypes, beliefs,
organizational culture, and leadership styles that suit the gender or leader in place (Appelbaum,
Audet & Miller, 2013). Even though men have proved to be excellent in executing senior
managerial positions, the dramatic involvement and success of women in similar positions is
notable. Thus, gender plays an essential role in leadership and women promotions.
Problem statement
Key managerial positions in both public and private companies are held by men. Diversity
in the workplace is evident. However, women remain to occupy low-level technical positions as
compared to men. Consequently, organizational profitability and decision-making is attributed to
men (Kacmar, Bachrach & Zivnuska, 2011). Comparatively, there has been a drastic improvement
in the number of female executives in few organizations. Similarly, the female executive contribute
substantially to the organizational success. Even though such statistics indicate a low adoption rate
for female executives, there is need to identify the impact each of the leaders can have on
leadership.
Thus, the study seeks to explore the contribution that gender has on leadership and how it
also impacts about promotions. The paper particularly examines the role of gender while paying
attention to female leaders, their challenges, and how the organization and other stakeholders
perceive their decisions (Kacmar, Bachrach & Zivnuska, 2011). Additionally, the paper aims at

identifying barriers and strengths of women performing in male-dominated institutions or fields of
work.
Justification
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the role of gender in leadership in women
working in male dominated fields. The study is a qualitative research since it seeks to explore large
and non-numeric data that defines the characteristics, concepts, and concepts representing the
phenomenon of study (Appelbaum, Audet & Miller, 2013). The study observes individuals to
identify their behavior and experience towards a certain social phenomena.
The topic is of interest to me because of the statistics reported about womens involvement
in leadership. Particularly, I believe women should receive equal leadership opportunities just as
men. Some of the biases here include attributing more success to women because of the stand
about women in leadership. This may result in unfavorable decisions if not addressed. The research
aims at understanding the impact of gender on leadership especially among women in maledominated fields. Substantial information will come from relevant statistics, interviews, case
studies, and observation. The research questions are; how does gender impact leadership? And
how does gender influence womens decisions to pursue promotion?

Research Article
Dickes, L. A., & Crouch, E. (2015, November). Policy effectiveness of US governors:
The role of gender and changing institutional powers. In Women’s Studies International
Forum (Vol. 53, pp. 90-98). Pergamon.
Summary
This article documents the vital role of gender in the ever-changing institutional powers.
Lori and Elizabeth documented this article based on the United States governors and their
experiences and behavior. The authors record the increasing rate of female governors and their
contribution to the various institutions and the political arena. According to the authors, there exists
differences between the leadership styles, behavior, and legacies enhanced by male and female
leaders.
Analysis/Critique
The article reveals the different perceptions about the role of gender in leadership. The
authors base their findings on binomial generalizations about gubernatorial powers and political
institutions. However, this may fail to represent the actual role of gender in leadership since it
doesnt map the need of all leaders.
Application
The article implies that both gender plays a vital role in shaping leadership and promotion
decisions among women. Comparatively, both female and male leaders may exhibit bias which
are different depending on the scenarios and may consequently favor both genders. Thus, the role
of gender in leadership doesnt juts favor the gender represented by the leaders but may enhance
effective policies and leadership styles for all.

Lyness, K. S., & Grotto, A. R. (2018). Women and Leadership in the United States:
Are We Closing the Gender Gap?. Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and
Organizational Behavior, 5, 227-265.
Summary
Karen and Angela document an article that attributes the closing gender gap in leadership.
The authors argue that women and men have actively undertaken the leadership duties.
Consequently, both teams enhance excellent and competent leadership in their areas. Thus, both
gender enhance effective leadership.
Analysis/ Critique
The article further analyses the factors that facilitate and limit women in their leadership.
According to the article, barriers and women disempowerment results in the few number of female
leaders. However, there is much more to this than the authors findings.
Application
The article significantly contributes to the topic under review. Here, the findings enable
conclusions that both male and female leaders are healthy for any organization. Further, the report
indicates that developing a leadership strategy which enhances equal leadership opportunities for
both genders can improve leadership effectiveness.

ROLE OF GENDER IN LEADERSHIP
Summary
Women working in male-dominated institutions have a couple of unique of experiences
and barriers. These impact the achievement of their career goals, retention, and coping strategies.
Phiona and Antoni argue that women in such scenarios often change their career to womendominated careers due to particular reasons.
Analysis/ Critique
The findings noted in the article are very insightful. However, the constructivist grounded
theory fails to address whether the gender of the leaders impacts the decisions of most women in
male-dominated careers. Consequently, the discrimination and bias laws would protect such
women while in such fields. Thus, the research fails to review all the vital aspect of leadership in
the male-dominated fields.
Application
The report identifies the role of gender in leadership in regards to women leadership. The
paper attributes success among female workforce to empowerment and motivation. However, the
authors argue that the male dominated careers lack such thus limiting womens survival.
Consequently, such fields should develop multilevel empowerment programs to encourage women
to pursue and excel in similar scenarios.
Conclusion
Gender has a substantial influence in leadership. Even though human beings may exhibit
implicit biases towards certain demographics, leaders should identify and mitigate such
occurrences. The literature above generally argues that more women have been included in top
management. However, support and empowerment from both genders can encourage and enhance
effective leadership.

Instructors Feedback highlighting the new or revise text
Hi Tamara,
Let’s look at leadership from a perspective that has not yet been explored or look for a way to
improve on the study.
Here are the two perspectives I propose you can choose whichever one you would like.
Perspectives
1. Women whose leadership style is different than her male counterpart and the comparative
analysis of impact, effectiveness, results of that style.
2. Look at women who have followed a male in the position. Examine company growth
factors: profit, physical growth, promotion of females to executive level
Find an article using google scholar and include this another annotated bibliography using the
article you find relevant to one of the two perspectives. Then answer part 3
FYI- Ways to improve on the study:
Answer, address or explore these- Each study has a critique that states how the authors failed to
address an issue or area of leadership.
