Plans. Understanding a students behavior is an important piece in ensuring that a child’s
needs are met if behavior is a concern. Once an FBA is conducted teams can meet to
create a Behavior Intervention Plan to support the student.

Understanding a Childs Behavior
It is important to understand whether a childs
behaviors rise to a level where they should be
addressed in the IEP.
Do they impact the childs ability to access the
curriculum? Do they interfere with the childs
day to day tasks?
It is also important to establish an
understanding of the childs behavior. Why are
they behaving that way?
Its our job as advocates to ?gure out the
reason for the behavior and create an effective
plan.

What is a Functional Behavior Assessment?
An effective FBA is completed as a team and has the following components:
? Properly de?ned target behavior
? Data regarding how often the target behavior occurs, in what setting and under
what conditions
? A hypothesis of the reason the behaviors occur
? Interventions attempted with data to test the hypothesis for the function of
(reasons for) the behavior.
There are several well-known functions of behaviors in all of us. Some of the reasons
are:

? To obtain power and control in a given situation

a grammar warm up each day. During the warm up, the students
must copy 3-5 sentences from the promethean board into their
journals and make corrections to the sentences based on the
weekly grammar focus. It has been reported to Masons parents
that he has di?culty staying in his seat, talks to his peers and
often distracts them. The teacher decides to start sending Mason
out of the room to the counselor or the o?ce during this time,
however his behavior only gets worse. The team decides to
develop an FBA to ?gure out the root of the problem. After
collecting and analyzing the data, the team learns that Mason is
having di?culty reading the material presented because he cannot
read the examples and has di?culty copying them down. His
behavior was to avoid the task.

After the IEP has been created, now what? It is your job as an educator to
ensure that your students IEPs are being met. It will take a lot of collaborating
and organization to ensure that their plan is being followed.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
After the plan has been written, you may be wondering what you can do next
to ensure that the childs needs are being met and the plan is being followed.
Here are a few suggestions:
Assure all providers are informed about their responsibilities
Create a way to gather data that is easy to use
Update present levels of progress (PLOP) often; keeping track of this
regularly will make inputting it into the IEP easier, and make it easier to
report progress to parents
Revisit goals and objectives to ensure they are being worked on and are
still appropriate
Create a list of accommodations & supplementary aids and services that
is readily available to all teachers and service providers

Because progress is typically reported each
quarter, its imperative to collect data in an
organized way that is easy to do.
Some ways to collect data are:

Typically, IEP teams report progress with report cards quarterly.
When looking at goals and objectives, its best to help parents understand that the team
has an entire calendar year to meet the goal.
There are many ways to report progress besides on the IEP.
